What Is International SEO?
International SEO helps a website reach people in different countries or languages through market-specific research, localised content, appropriate URL structures and language or regional signals. It connects the search opportunity in each market with the business’s ability to serve that customer.
Two English-speaking markets can search differently and expect different products, delivery terms or proof. We establish those differences before expanding the site. For retailers, ecommerce SEO connects local demand with stock and fulfilment; enterprise SEO supports governance across larger market portfolios.

YOUR SITUATION
What Changes When You Enter A New Market
Choose the situation closest to yours to see what we investigate, deliver and measure.
Market selection
Search volume is only one input. A country with demand can still be a poor first expansion if margins, shipping or sales coverage don't support it.
- Assess
- Demand, competition, fulfilment and the conversion route.
- Decide
- A first market and an achievable set of commercial pages.
- Measure
- Qualified enquiries or orders from that market, not worldwide sessions.
URL structure
Subfolders, subdomains and country domains each create different maintenance and ownership requirements. The right option follows the existing estate and the resources available.
- Assess
- Current authority, CMS capabilities and regional team ownership.
- Decide
- A structure that keeps useful regional pages crawlable and maintainable.
- Measure
- Correct regional URLs appearing for their intended searches.
Hreflang
Hreflang identifies alternate language or regional versions. It needs valid codes, reciprocal references and consistency with the pages’ canonical strategy.
- Assess
- Equivalent page pairs and whether every version serves a real audience.
- Decide
- A documented mapping, including a suitable fallback where needed.
- Measure
- Mapping errors and wrong-country landing pages after recrawling.
Localisation
Translation changes language. Localisation changes examples, terminology and commercial details so a customer can confidently act.
- Assess
- Local search phrasing, payment expectations, delivery and product availability.
- Decide
- Content priorities and qualified language review before publishing.
- Measure
- Local organic conversions and the questions still blocking purchase.
The audit confirms the priorities for your site. These examples explain the decisions, not a fixed package of tasks.

What SEO costs in Australia
How International SEO Is Scoped
We scope international SEO by market and language. Research, localisation, technical implementation and ongoing review are separate workstreams, with ownership agreed before launch. Starting with one well-supported market is often more useful than opening ten thin country sections.

International SEO Questions, Answered
Practical answers to the questions businesses ask before choosing a provider.
What is international SEO?
International SEO improves a site’s visibility across countries or languages. It combines local demand research, regional URL decisions, content localisation and signals such as hreflang so people can find an appropriate version of the site.
Is international SEO the same as multilingual SEO?
No. Multilingual SEO serves different languages; international SEO can also serve several countries in the same language. An Australian and New Zealand store may both use English while needing different delivery details, products and regional targeting.
Do we need separate websites for each country?
Not necessarily. Subfolders, subdomains and country domains can all have a role. We consider the existing site, team capacity, localisation requirements and long-term maintenance before recommending a structure.
What does hreflang do?
Hreflang tells Google about equivalent language or regional page versions. It can help the appropriate version appear for a user, but it does not translate content or guarantee rankings. The mappings must be technically consistent.
Can we translate our Australian pages with AI?
Only with human review. AI can support drafting, but publication needs language and subject review. Literal translation can miss local search intent, product terminology and customer expectations. Important commercial claims and delivery information need checking in each market.
Should we redirect visitors automatically by country?
Usually not. Forced location redirects can frustrate travellers and make some versions harder to access. A visible country or language selector and a helpful suggestion usually give people more control while keeping regional pages reachable.
How do you choose the first international market?
We compare search demand and competition with commercial readiness: stock, delivery, sales coverage and margin. The best first market is one the business can serve well, not necessarily the one with the largest search volume.
Can international SEO support ecommerce expansion?
Yes. The plan connects country-specific searches with local categories, product availability, currency and delivery information. Regional SEO can't compensate for an offer that customers in that country can't actually buy.
How do you measure international SEO?
We separate performance by country, language and landing-page group, then compare visibility with local orders or qualified enquiries. Aggregate worldwide traffic can conceal a declining priority market or growth in a country the business doesn't serve.
How much does international SEO cost?
Scope depends on the number of markets and languages, the site structure and the amount of local content needed. Translation, language review and development responsibilities are agreed before quoting so each market has a realistic delivery budget.
Let’s Plan Your Next Step
A translated website isn't an international search strategy. We help Australian businesses choose the right markets, match local search intent and send customers to the right country or language version.
