WordPress SEO Agency That Fixes What Plugins Can’t
An SEO plugin fills in the title tags. It doesn't speed up a heavy theme, clean up years of archive pages or write the page that outranks a competitor. We do the work a plugin can't, then report on the enquiries and sales it brings in.

What Is WordPress SEO?
WordPress SEO is the work of making a WordPress site rank in Google and get cited in AI answers: fixing how the theme and plugins load, controlling which pages WordPress lets search engines index, and writing and structuring the pages that should win each search. A WordPress SEO agency audits the live site, fixes speed and indexing problems, maps searches to pages, writes and improves those pages, earns links, and reports on the enquiries and sales that follow.
WordPress gives more control than any hosted platform, which cuts both ways. Core creates a sitemap, image srcsets and lazy loading, but it also creates tag, author and date archives, and every plugin adds code. An SEO plugin handles titles and schema; it can't choose which pages deserve to exist. That's the job, and it draws on our technical SEO and local SEO work, and for online stores, our WooCommerce SEO service.
If you would rather work through the basics in-house first, our WordPress SEO guide covers the settings, plugins and structure to check.
WordPress SEO Services, Site By Site
Six pieces of work cover almost every WordPress site we audit. The audit sets the order, because a slow theme or a thousand thin archive pages can hold back everything else.
-
Speed And Core Web Vitals
Theme, page builder, plugin and hosting weight measured on real templates, then cut where it costs the most.
Technical SEO -
Plugin And Index Clean-Up
Archives, attachment pages and plugin output reviewed, so Google indexes the pages that sell and skips the rest.
-
Service Pages And Content
Pages written for the search behind them, with the headings, depth and internal links to outrank the page above.
-
Local SEO
Location pages, Google Business Profile and local schema working together for businesses that win on place.
Local SEO agency -
Schema And AI Search
One clean structured data graph and quotable answers, so Google and AI assistants read the business correctly.
AI search optimisation -
Links And Digital PR
Editorial links and mentions from sites your market already reads, earned through outreach and never bought.
Link building
BUILDER OR HAND-CODED
Is WordPress Good For SEO?
Yes, and how it is built matters as much as the platform. Here's how a page builder site compares with a hand-coded WordPress theme.
Page builder
Elementor, Divi and similar- Editing
- Drag and drop, by anyone
- Code on each page
- Builder CSS, scripts and nested markup on every page
- Speed work
- Caching and optimisation plugins around the builder
- Design changes
- Quick, with no developer
- Build cost
- Lower up front
- Best for
- Small sites that change often
Hand-coded theme
Custom templates and fields- Editing
- Fields the developer sets up
- Code on each page
- Only the code that page uses
- Speed work
- Fixed once, in the template
- Design changes
- Need a developer
- Build cost
- Higher up front
- Best for
- Sites where speed and scale matter
We moved uppercutdigital.com.au off Elementor to a hand-coded WordPress build in September 2026, so this is advice we've taken ourselves. A builder is still the right call for plenty of small sites.
HOW WORDPRESS SEO WORKS
Three Things Every WordPress Site Needs
A WordPress site ranks on the same three kinds of work as any other. What changes is how much of it sits in themes and plugins.
What they hold upRankings, AI citations and the enquiries they bring
-
Hosting, Theme And Plugins
Does the site load fast, and does Google index only the pages worth ranking?
- Core Web Vitals and hosting
- Plugin audit and clean-up
- Archive and attachment pages
- Sitemaps and robots rules
- Redirects and migrations
-
Pages And Content
Does each page answer its search better than the page above it?
- Keyword map by page
- Service and location pages
- Titles, headings and meta
- Structured data
- Internal links
-
Authority
Do other sites trust the business enough to link to it and mention it?
- Editorial links and digital PR
- Google Business Profile
- Reviews
- Citations
- Brand mentions for AI answers
What they stand onTracking in Search Console, GA4 and your CRM
A fast site with thin pages still loses, and strong pages on a slow site are read by fewer people. The audit finds the weakest of the three first.
A WordPress SEO Process You Can Check
-
01
Site And Plugin Audit
A crawl of the live site, every active plugin and the theme, with Search Console and GA4 key events checked and a baseline of rankings and enquiries recorded before anything changes.
-
02
Keyword And Page Map
Every search worth winning is matched to the page that should rank, showing which pages to fix, which to merge and which to build.
-
03
Fix, Write And Build
Speed and indexing fixes first, then content and internal links, then the links and PR that build authority, in the order the audit set.
-
04
Report And Refine
Enquiries, revenue, non-branded clicks and AI citations in one report, with next month’s work set by what moved.
WHAT WE FIX ON WORDPRESS
Six WordPress SEO Problems, And What We Do About Them
These turn up in most WordPress audits. Open one to see how it shows up, what we check and how we know it is fixed.
<meta name='robots' content='noindex, nofollow' />
Hidden from Google
The "Discourage search engines" box in Settings, Reading is ticked while a site is built and sometimes never unticked. WordPress then tells every search engine to stay away from every page.
- Check
- The robots tag on live templates, and Search Console’s page indexing report.
- Fix
- Untick the setting, request indexing for key pages and resubmit the sitemap.
- Measure
- Indexed pages and impressions recovering in Search Console.
/tag/emergency-plumber-sydney/
Archive bloat
WordPress builds a page for every tag, category, author and month. Years of tagging leaves hundreds of thin pages that repeat each other and compete with the service pages.
- Check
- Which archives are indexed, linked and ever earn a click.
- Fix
- Keep the useful categories, noindex or remove the rest and redirect where links point.
- Measure
- Indexed URL count against the pages that earn clicks.
/services/attachment/hero-image-2/
Attachment pages
Sites started before WordPress 6.4 can still publish a separate page for every uploaded image, each one a thin page with a single picture on it.
- Check
- Whether attachment URLs resolve, are indexed or appear in the sitemap.
- Fix
- Turn attachment pages off or redirect them to the file or the parent page.
- Measure
- Attachment URLs leaving the index.
<div class="elementor-element elementor-element-3f2a1c9">
Page builder weight
Page builders make editing easy and add nested markup, CSS and scripts to every page. On a busy template that shows up as slow loading and layout shift on mobile.
- Check
- Page weight, DOM size and Core Web Vitals on the templates that matter.
- Fix
- Remove unused widgets and assets, or rebuild the key templates without the builder.
- Measure
- Core Web Vitals from real users on mobile.
2 × <link rel="canonical">
Two SEO plugins
A second SEO plugin, or a theme with its own SEO settings, prints a second set of titles, canonicals and schema. Google then has to guess which one you meant.
- Check
- Every meta tag and structured data block in the rendered page source.
- Fix
- One plugin owns titles, canonicals and schema; the other is removed cleanly.
- Measure
- One canonical and one schema graph per page, and clean rich result reports.
site:yourbusiness.com.au
Hacked spam pages
An outdated plugin can let spammers publish pages on your domain that you never see in the admin. Google does see them, and so do searchers.
- Check
- A site: search, Search Console’s security report and unknown URLs in the crawl.
- Fix
- Remove the injected pages, patch the entry point and update or replace the plugin.
- Measure
- Spam URLs returning 404 or 410 and dropping out of the index.
Platform behaviour checked against WordPress.org documentation, September 2026. Your audit confirms which of these apply to your site.

How WordPress SEO Is Priced
WordPress SEO is scoped after an audit rather than sold as a package. The retainer depends on the size of the site, how much content the market needs, and whether the theme and plugin work is ours or your developer’s. No lock-in contracts; the content, data and accounts are yours.
-
When WordPress SEO Is Not The Answer
If the site is about to be rebuilt, plan the rebuild and its redirects first rather than optimising pages that are about to change. If you need enquiries this month, Google Ads will bring them sooner. We'll tell you which applies.
-
Who We Are Not The Right Fit For
Anyone who wants a guaranteed number one ranking; Google warns against agencies that promise one. Sites where we can't get admin access or change a plugin. Businesses that want links bought in bulk. Turning work down beats taking a retainer we can't move.

WordPress SEO Questions, Answered
The questions Australian businesses ask before hiring a WordPress SEO agency.
Is WordPress Good For SEO?
Yes. WordPress gives full control of URLs, templates, structured data and hosting, and core creates an XML sitemap, responsive images and lazy loading. The same freedom lets heavy themes, plugins and archive pages hold a site back, so results depend on how the site is built and maintained.
What Does A WordPress SEO Agency Do?
A WordPress SEO agency makes a WordPress site rank in Google and appear in AI answers. The work covers a technical audit of the theme and plugins, speed and indexing fixes, a keyword map, content and on-page optimisation, structured data, links and reporting on enquiries and revenue.
Is Yoast Or Rank Math Better For WordPress SEO?
Either works well; the setup matters more than the choice. Both handle titles, meta descriptions, canonicals, sitemaps and schema. What causes problems is running two SEO plugins at once, which prints duplicate tags and structured data.
Do I Need An SEO Plugin For WordPress?
Usually, yes. WordPress core has no field for meta descriptions and limited control over titles and schema, so one SEO plugin, or a theme built to handle them, fills that gap. One is enough.
Do Page Builders Like Elementor Hurt SEO?
Page builders don't carry a ranking penalty, but they add CSS, scripts and nested markup to every page, which can make a site slower on mobile. A well-configured builder site can rank; a template with many widgets usually needs speed work or a lighter rebuild.
How Much Does WordPress SEO Cost In Australia?
WordPress SEO in Australia is usually a monthly retainer set by the size of the site, the competition and how much content and development work is needed. Uppercut Digital prices it after an audit and keeps Australian market ranges in its SEO cost guide.
How Long Does WordPress SEO Take To Work?
Indexing and speed fixes can show within weeks, while new pages and authority usually take several months to turn into steady enquiries. Competitive markets take longer, and nobody can promise a date for a ranking.
Why Is My WordPress Site Not Showing On Google?
The most common cause is the "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" box in Settings, Reading, which adds a noindex tag to every page. Other causes are a noindex set by an SEO plugin, a blocked robots.txt, or a new site Google hasn't crawled yet. Search Console shows which applies.
How Do I Speed Up A WordPress Website?
Speed up a WordPress website by removing plugins you don't need, serving correctly sized images, caching pages, choosing a faster host and cutting page builder weight on the busiest templates. Measure Core Web Vitals on mobile before and after each change.
Do You Do SEO For WooCommerce Stores?
Yes. WooCommerce runs on WordPress, so the same theme, plugin and speed work applies, plus product and category pages, filters, variations and product structured data.
