SEO on the Northern Beaches

We run search campaigns for businesses across the Northern Beaches, from Manly north through Dee Why and Cromer. It is a single council covering a long, narrow strip, and that shape decides more about local search here than anything else.

A long strip with one road down it

The Northern Beaches is one local government area, which sounds simpler than the seven councils on the North Shore and is not. The complication here is not administrative, it is the shape. The region is long and narrow with one main road running the length of it, so customers do not think in circles around themselves. They think in how far north or south they would have to drive, and at peak times that is the only thing they think about.

That makes the service area settings on a Google Business Profile matter more here than in most of Sydney. A radius drawn around a Dee Why address covers a great deal of water and a national park, and a business in Manly setting a generous radius is claiming an area it will not realistically service in traffic. The businesses that do well are specific about the corridor they cover rather than the distance.

The three suburbs we cover here also serve genuinely different customers. Manly takes visitors as well as residents, so its searches carry a seasonal and tourist component that behaves nothing like the rest of the Beaches. Dee Why is the commercial centre of the middle stretch and the practical boundary customers use when deciding whether a business counts as local to them. Cromer holds one of the few industrial pockets on the peninsula, so its businesses are largely trade suppliers whose customers search by what they need rather than by where they are.

Where we would start on the Northern Beaches

These come out of the shape of the region rather than from a generic local checklist.

  1. 01

Set the service area to the corridor, not a radius

A circle around a Beaches address covers water, bush and suburbs nobody will drive to. Naming the run of suburbs you actually cover is both more honest and more effective.

  2. 02

Target Dee Why even if you are not in it

It is the boundary customers use for the middle Beaches, so neighbouring businesses are often better off being findable for it than for their own smaller suburb alone.

  3. 03

Separate visitor intent from resident intent

In Manly the two are different audiences searching different things at different times of year. One page trying to serve both usually serves neither.

Sydney clients in the sectors the Beaches runs on

These are Sydney businesses rather than Northern Beaches ones, and they are here because fitness and events are two of the sectors this region is built on. The figures are theirs, published on their case studies and unchanged here.

The Northern Beaches and nearby

Frequently asked questions about The Northern Beaches

Which suburbs does the Northern Beaches cover here?

Manly, Dee Why and Cromer, all inside Northern Beaches Council. Each has its own page.

How far should our service area reach?

Along the peninsula rather than around you. A radius on the Beaches covers water and bush, and it claims suburbs your customers will not drive from. Naming the corridor is more accurate and it matches how people here decide what counts as local.

Is Manly worth targeting if we are not in it?

It depends whether you want the visitor trade. Manly carries tourist and seasonal demand that the rest of the Beaches does not, and serving it well needs its own content rather than a suburb swap on an existing page.

We are a trade business in Cromer. Do customers search the suburb?

Often not. Trade and supplier searches here tend to be by what the customer needs rather than where they are, so the terms worth holding are the service ones with the suburb as support rather than the other way round.

What does SEO on the Northern Beaches cost?

Visitor demand in Manly and trade demand in Cromer are different pieces of work, and the state of your existing site changes it again. Neither of those is knowable from a price list, so we would rather look first.
