SEO on the North Shore

We run search campaigns for businesses across the North Shore, from Chatswood and Mosman through Lane Cove and Hunters Hill to Ryde and the Ku-ring-gai suburbs. Seven councils sit inside this stretch, and the suburbs are close enough together that the boundaries matter less than the distances.

Ten small suburbs, seven councils

The North Shore is the most fragmented region in this set. Willoughby, Ku-ring-gai, Lane Cove, Mosman, Hunters Hill, the City of Ryde and Hornsby Shire all have territory here, and the suburbs inside them are small. Several of the ones we cover are a few streets across.

That density changes which lever actually moves a ranking. In a sprawling region a business wins its own suburb and the question is how far out it can reach. Here the suburbs are close enough that Google is choosing between businesses that are all plausibly near the searcher, so proximity to the person searching does most of the deciding and a council boundary does almost none of it. A Lane Cove business is competing for attention with Chatswood and North Sydney on the same searches, and it will lose them by default unless its pages say the suburb out loud.

The other thing to understand here is that the region contains two genuinely commercial precincts and a lot of residential ground, and they need opposite treatment. Chatswood is a centre in its own right and North Ryde adjoins Macquarie Park, one of the largest office precincts in the country, so both sell to other businesses. South Turramurra, East Killara and Beecroft are residential with little or no commercial strip, so the businesses ranking there travel to the customer, which is an entirely different Google Business Profile setup.

Language is a first-order consideration in one part of it. Chatswood has large Chinese-speaking and Korean-speaking populations, so a real share of the demand there is searched in another language and never touches an English-language keyword tool.

Where we would start on the North Shore

Which of these applies depends on whether you have a shopfront, a business address or a van, which on the North Shore is the question that decides everything else.

  1. 01

Decide whether you are a location or a service area

A shopfront in Chatswood and a service business covering Ku-ring-gai need different profile settings, different pages and different terms. Getting this wrong is the most common fault we see in this region.

  2. 02

    Say the suburb, explicitly

Small suburbs beside big ones lose searches by default. Lane Cove, Woolwich and East Killara have to be named on the page rather than implied, or the larger centre absorbs the search.

  3. 03

Treat Chatswood as a multilingual market

A meaningful share of the demand there is not searched in English. Ignoring that is not a small optimisation left on the table, it is a share of the market you cannot see.

Sydney clients in the sectors the North Shore runs on

These are Sydney businesses rather than North Shore ones, and they are here because dental and home services are two of the sectors this region is built on. Both sets of figures come from their own published case studies.

Frequently asked questions about The North Shore

Which suburbs does the North Shore cover here?

Chatswood, Mosman, South Turramurra, Beecroft, Lane Cove, Lane Cove West, Ryde, East Killara, Woolwich and North Ryde, across Willoughby, Ku-ring-gai, Lane Cove, Mosman, Hunters Hill, the City of Ryde and Hornsby Shire. Each has its own page.

Why does my Lane Cove business keep losing to Chatswood?

Because the suburbs are close enough that Google treats both as near the searcher, and Chatswood is the better-known term. The fix is being explicit about the suburb on the page rather than relying on proximity to speak for you.

We travel to customers. Does a suburb page still help?

Yes, but it is a different page. A service-area business needs its profile configured for the area it travels to rather than a shopfront address, and pages written for the suburbs it serves rather than the one it is registered in.

Is Chatswood worth targeting in Chinese or Korean?

It is worth investigating. Chatswood has large Chinese-speaking and Korean-speaking populations and a share of the local demand is searched that way, so English-only keyword research understates the market. Whether it is worth building for depends on who you sell to.

What does SEO on the North Shore cost?

Chatswood and East Killara are opposite ends of the same region and nothing like the same job, so a single North Shore figure would mislead you either way. We would rather look at which one you are in before quoting anything.
