What Programmatic Advertising Is And Where It Runs
Programmatic advertising is the automated buying of ad space. A demand-side platform (DSP) bids for each impression through real-time bidding, in the milliseconds before a page, app or stream loads, on ad exchanges where publishers sell through a supply-side platform (SSP). Audience, context and price decide every bid. It reaches display and native placements, online video, BVOD and connected TV, digital out of home screens and audio, through demand-side platforms such as Google Display & Video 360 and The Trade Desk.
A programmatic agency plans the audiences and deals, runs campaigns through a demand-side platform or a specialist trading partner chosen for your formats and budget, and checks where every impression landed. Programmatic buys well beyond Google’s own network, so it works alongside display advertising on Google rather than replacing it, and when customers already search for what you sell, PPC management usually earns its budget first.
What You Can Buy Programmatically In Australia
Each format reaches people in a different moment, from a news site at breakfast to a streaming app at night. We plan the ones that match how your customers spend their day.
-
Display And Native
Banners on news and specialist sites, and native cards that match the articles around them, across many exchanges.
-
Online Video
Pre-roll and outstream video on publisher sites and apps, judged on completed views rather than autoplay starts.
-
BVOD And Connected TV
Commercial breaks in broadcaster streaming apps and on smart TVs, planned by reach and frequency rather than clicks.
-
Digital Out Of Home
Digital screens at bus shelters, shopping centres and stations, scheduled by location and time of day.
-
Audio And Podcasts
Ads in streaming radio, music and podcast apps, heard with headphones in and often with no screen in sight.
-
Retargeting Across The Open Web
Dynamic banners that bring back people who viewed a product, on sites well beyond Google, with frequency caps set.

Verification And Brand Safety Come With Every Campaign

GOOGLE DISPLAY ADS VS PROGRAMMATIC
Google Display Buys One Network. Programmatic Buys Across Many.
Both put ads on websites. The difference is where they can run, who checks them and what it takes to start, and for many businesses display advertising on Google is the right first step.
Google Display Ads
Bought inside Google Ads- Where ads can run
- The Google Display Network, YouTube and Gmail
- How it is bought
- An auction inside Google Ads, mostly automated
- Formats
- Image, responsive display and video ads
- Brand safety checks
- Content exclusions and a placement report
- Deals with publishers
- No private deals with publishers
- Practical starting budget
- No minimum, so small tests are possible
- Best for
- Remarketing and reach on a smaller budget
Programmatic Advertising
Bought through a demand-side platform- Where ads can run
- Many exchanges, apps, streaming TV and screens
- How it is bought
- Real-time bidding on each impression
- Formats
- Display, native, video, BVOD, digital out of home, audio
- Brand safety checks
- Pre-bid filtering from IAS or DoubleVerify
- Deals with publishers
- Private marketplaces and guaranteed deals
- Practical starting budget
- Most campaigns need at least $5,000 a month in media
- Best for
- Premium formats, precise audiences and scale
A Programmatic Process Built Around Verification

01
Audience And Data Plan
Who you need to reach and what can find them: your first-party customer data, contextual signals and privacy-safe IDs such as UID2, planned before any format is chosen.
-
02
Platform And Deals
A demand-side platform or a specialist trading partner is chosen for your formats and budget, then the mix of open exchange, private marketplace and guaranteed deals is set.
-
03
Verification And Brand Safety
IAS or DoubleVerify pre-bid filtering keeps ads off unsafe pages and away from invalid traffic, and viewability is judged against the MRC standard: half the ad in view for one second, two for video.
-
04
Measure And Optimise
Brand lift studies, incrementality tests against holdout groups and footfall studies for screens near your stores, in one Looker Studio report, with budget moved to what adds customers.
PROGRAMMATIC DEAL TYPES
Open Exchange, Private Marketplace Or Programmatic Guaranteed
The deal type decides who else can bid, what the inventory is and how firmly the price is set. Pick one to see when it's worth it.
Open auction
Open Exchange
Any buyer can bid on the impressions a publisher releases to the exchange. It gives the widest reach at the lowest price per thousand, and the most inventory to filter.
- How it is priced
- A real-time auction, usually the cheapest cost per thousand impressions
- Who can bid
- Any advertiser whose platform is connected to the exchange
- Inventory
- Very broad, from quality publishers to pages built only to sell ads
- When it is worth it
- Reach and retargeting at scale, with strict pre-bid filtering
Invite-only auction
Private Marketplace
An auction a publisher, or a group of publishers, opens only to invited buyers through a deal ID, for inventory kept out of the open market.
- How it is priced
- An auction with a floor price set by the publisher
- Who can bid
- Only the buyers the publisher invites
- Inventory
- Chosen sites, sections or audiences, often premium
- When it is worth it
- Brand-safe premium placements without a fixed commitment
Fixed price, first look
Preferred Deal
A fixed price agreed with one publisher, with a first look at impressions before they reach the auction and no obligation to buy them.
- How it is priced
- A fixed price per thousand impressions, agreed in advance
- Who can bid
- One buyer, who sees the impressions before the auction
- Inventory
- Impressions from one publisher, not guaranteed in volume
- When it is worth it
- Testing a premium publisher before committing to volume
Reserved, fixed price
Programmatic Guaranteed
A reserved buy of an agreed number of impressions at a fixed price, delivered through a demand-side platform instead of a manual booking.
- How it is priced
- A fixed price for a guaranteed volume of impressions
- Who can bid
- No auction: one buyer, agreed directly with the publisher
- Inventory
- Reserved premium placements, such as streaming TV breaks
- When it is worth it
- Launches and seasonal peaks where delivery must be certain
Not every publisher offers every deal type, and access depends on the platform, the publisher and the budget.

Straight Answers Before You Enquire
What programmatic costs, when it's the wrong channel, and who we turn away.
-
What Programmatic Advertising Costs
Most programmatic campaigns need at least $5,000 a month in media to reach enough people and learn, and that's the guidance we give before planning one. The price per thousand impressions depends on the format: open-exchange display is usually the cheapest, while premium video, BVOD and digital billboards cost several times more. The management fee is quoted once we know the formats, deals and reporting involved. Guidance last checked in September 2026.
-
When Programmatic Is Not The Right Channel
Below a few thousand dollars a month, Google Display, Demand Gen and Meta usually do the same job for less, through display advertising on Google or social media advertising. If people already search for what you sell, search ads pay back sooner. If nothing can measure what the reach did, the budget is hard to defend. We'll tell you which of these applies.
-
Who We Are Not The Right Fit For
Anyone who wants the lowest CPM reported as the result. Advertisers who need a specific platform seat or direct broadcaster deals arranged from day one. Campaigns with no conversion, sale or store visit to measure against. We would rather say no than run spend we can't verify.

Programmatic Advertising Questions, Answered
The questions Australian businesses search before they spend on programmatic advertising.
What Is Programmatic Advertising?
Programmatic advertising is the automated buying of ad impressions, where software bids for each one in real time based on the audience, context and price you set. A demand-side platform places the bids through ad exchanges, across display, native, video, BVOD and connected TV, digital billboards and audio, instead of each placement being booked with a publisher by hand.
How Much Does Programmatic Advertising Cost In Australia?
Most programmatic campaigns in Australia need at least $5,000 a month in media to reach enough people and learn, plus a management fee. The price per thousand impressions is usually lowest for open-exchange display, while premium video, BVOD and digital billboards cost several times more, so the formats you choose set most of the budget.
Is There A Minimum Budget For Programmatic Advertising?
Some platforms set no minimum, but a campaign still needs enough spend to reach a meaningful audience and give the bidding enough data to learn. Our guidance is at least $5,000 a month in media. Below that, Google Display, Demand Gen and Meta usually reach the same people for less.
What Is A Demand-Side Platform (DSP)?
A demand-side platform, or DSP, is the software advertisers use to bid on ad impressions across many exchanges and publishers at once. Google Display & Video 360 and The Trade Desk are examples. Publishers use a supply-side platform, or SSP, to sell the space, and the ad exchange is where the two meet.
How Is Programmatic Different From Google Display Ads?
Google Display ads run on Google’s own network and are bought inside Google Ads, while programmatic buys across many exchanges and publishers through a demand-side platform. That opens private deals, BVOD, digital out of home and audio, with independent verification. Google Display is simpler and usually better value on a small budget.
Can You Buy BVOD And Connected TV Programmatically In Australia?
Yes, broadcaster streaming inventory from 7plus, 9Now and 10 is traded programmatically, and OzTAM’s VOZ Streaming service gives buyers shared audience data and frequency capping across those networks. Access depends on the demand-side platform and the deal type, and premium streaming costs more per thousand impressions than display.
What Is The Difference Between Open Exchange, PMP And Programmatic Guaranteed?
Open exchange is an open auction any connected buyer can join, a private marketplace is an invite-only auction run by chosen publishers, and programmatic guaranteed is a reserved volume of impressions at a fixed price, delivered through a demand-side platform. Preferred deals sit between them, with a fixed price and a first look but no commitment to buy.
How Do You Keep Programmatic Ads Brand Safe?
Programmatic ads are kept brand safe with pre-bid filtering from a verification vendor such as IAS or DoubleVerify, which blocks unsafe pages and invalid traffic before a bid is placed. Inclusion lists and private marketplaces narrow the inventory, and placement, viewability and invalid traffic reports are reviewed throughout the campaign.
Does Programmatic Advertising Still Work Without Third-Party Cookies?
Yes, and in Chrome third-party cookies haven't gone away: Google confirmed in April 2025 that it would keep its current approach. Safari and Firefox restrict them, so campaigns also use first-party data, contextual targeting and IDs such as UID2. Proposed Privacy Act changes, released as an exposure draft in August 2026, would tighten how that data is used.
Is Programmatic Advertising Right For My Business?
Programmatic suits brands buying reach at scale: streaming TV, digital billboards, premium publishers or audiences Google and Meta reach poorly. If your media budget is under a few thousand dollars a month, or customers already search for what you sell, Google Ads and Meta usually return more first, and programmatic can be added once they pay back.
Let’s Plan Your Programmatic Campaign
Tell us who you need to reach, the formats you have in mind and the budget, and we'll come back with a plan, or tell you if another channel will do the job for less.
