What is SEO for a security company?
SEO for a security company is the work of being found by somebody who has decided something needs protecting and has not yet decided who is doing it. The difficulty is the shape of the demand. Measured across Australia, 46,270 searches a month sit around this industry, and 32,450 of them, 70.1 per cent, are the hardware itself: cameras, alarms and systems bought as products, where the results are retailers and marketplaces. The Security Industry Act draws the same line. Selling basic household or automotive security items at approved classes of retail outlets is carved out of the licensing scheme entirely, while installing, maintaining, repairing or servicing the same equipment is not, so the licence boundary and the demand boundary land in the same place. What is left is 13,410 searches a month across thirty terms, and that is the work a security company actually sells: somebody who wants a guard, a patrol, a monitored site or a system fitted. That is what the pages have to be built for.
- Usually moves first
- A complete Business Profile, and a page for each service your licence covers
- Compounds
- A page for each site type you protect, in the words the buyer actually searches
- Measured by
- Enquiries by service and site type, not rankings
Why security companies lose the work they are licensed for
Seven of every ten searches in this industry are somebody pricing a box from a retailer, and the ones that are genuinely yours almost never say what needs protecting.
Enquiries by what was asked for, last month
| What the caller asked for, as entered when the enquiry came in | Enquiries |
|---|---|
| Security, no detail given | 28 |
| A camera or alarm for a house | 19 |
| Guards for an event | 11 |
| A camera system for a business | 9 |
| Overnight patrols for a construction site | 5 |
| Monitoring for an existing alarm | 3 |
| Total new patients | 75 |
-
One page for guards and for cameras
Guarding and installing are two different businesses sold to two different buyers, and the licence classes say so: guarding is a class 1 licence and selling, installing and servicing equipment is class 2. In the demand below, installed equipment is 6,100 searches a month against 5,500 for the guarding head terms, which is 1.11 times. A single services page competes properly for neither.
-
The hardware searches aren't your customers
32,450 searches a month, 70.1 per cent of everything in this industry, are for cameras, alarms and systems as products. That is a retail transaction, the Act treats it as one, and what ranks for those terms is retailers, marketplaces and the manufacturers. Competing there with a service page is competing with a business model, not with another security company.
-
Nobody says what needs protecting
Five phrases, security guard, security companies, security services, security company and security guards, come to 4,250 searches a month between them. That is 77.3 per cent of the guarding head demand, and not one of them names a site, a job or a risk. Most of them return a map pack, so a Business Profile settles them before anybody reads a word on a website.
-
Nobody can tell which enquiry came from where
When an enquiry arrives by phone it gets logged as “Google” or as nothing at all. Without the service and the site type recorded against the source, there's no way to know whether the construction site page earned its keep or whether the map pack did.
What Australia searches for
Every volume below is an Australian monthly average, pulled from Ahrefs on 13 September 2026. The grouping is the argument: read the totals, not the individual rows.

| alarm installation | 150 | A map pack, and an installation page |
| back to base monitoring | 150 | A page about what a monitoring centre does when an alarm is triggered |
| The hardware itself, which a retailer sells | ||
| security cameras | 26,000 | Retailers and marketplaces. This is a shopping search, not an enquiry |
| home security | 1,600 | A map pack over retail results. Mostly a householder pricing a product |

| security camera installation cost | 70 | A page that explains what moves the price |
| security guard hourly rate | 20 | Award and jobseeker pages. A buyer term, but a small one |
| security guard rates | 10 | Award and jobseeker pages |
| security guard cost | 10 | A page about what decides the rate for a shift |
Forty-five terms, 46,270 searches a month, and the shape of that table is the whole argument for the page. 32,450 of them, 70.1 per cent, are the hardware itself: cameras, alarms and systems bought as products, where the results are retailers and marketplaces. The Security Industry Act draws the same line, carving basic household and automotive security items sold at approved classes of retail outlets out of the licensing scheme while leaving the installation of that same equipment inside it. So the work a security company actually sells is the other 13,410 searches across thirty terms, and it splits almost evenly: 6,100 a month for equipment somebody wants installed against 5,500 for the guarding head terms, which is 1.11 times. Those two halves are two different businesses sold to two different buyers, and the licence classes say so. And 4,250 of the 5,500, 77.3 per cent, is five phrases that name no site, no job and no risk at all.

What our security company SEO covers
Built around the two halves of the demand: the people you supply, and the equipment you install.
-
Your Business Profile
Most of the guarding head terms return a map pack, so the profile settles them before anybody opens a website. Categories, service areas, the services you're licensed for, photographs of real work, and the reviews that decide which three listings a caller sees.
-
A page for each service, split by licence class
Guarding is a class 1 licence and equipment is class 2, and the buyers are different people with different questions. Static guards, mobile patrols, crowd control, cash-in-transit and monitoring on one side; cameras, access control, alarms and intercoms on the other. One services page carrying both competes properly for neither.
-
A page for each site type you protect
Construction sites, retail, warehouses, events and buildings with a concierge desk are 1,810 searches a month between them, and every one of them is somebody who has already decided what needs protecting. They convert far better than a head term and almost nobody writes for them properly.
-
Copy written to your licence classes
We read your master licence and your class endorsements first, and the pages describe only the activities they authorise. Advertising work you are not licensed for is the one mistake in this industry that a regulator can act on.
-
Being quotable in AI answers
Plain answers to the questions buyers actually ask, structured so an answer engine can lift them: what a monitoring centre does, what a mobile patrol costs to run, what a crowd controller is allowed to do. Nobody can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not claim to.
-
Enquiries recorded by service and site type
Call tracking and form tracking that record which service and which kind of site each enquiry came from, so you can see whether the construction site page earned its keep or whether the map pack did it.

Advertising a security business in New South Wales
A security business is licensed by the Commissioner of Police, not by Fair Trading, and the licence you hold decides what you are allowed to advertise. Every fact below was read first-hand from the Security Industry Act 1997 (NSW) on 13 September 2026.
What the Act stops you doing
- Advertise a security activity your licence does not authorise. Section 7(2) makes it an offence to carry on a security activity unless you hold a class 1 or class 2 licence that authorises that particular activity, with a maximum penalty of 500 penalty units or 2 years imprisonment or both, which at $110 a unit is $55,000.
- Supply people to carry on security activities without a master licence. Section 7(1) carries a maximum of 1,000 penalty units for a corporation, which is $110,000, and the same section caps the number of people a master licence lets you provide on any one day.
- Assume one class covers the lot. Section 11 splits class 1 into unarmed guarding and crowd control, bodyguard work, cash-in-transit, working with a dog, monitoring centre operations and armed work, and it says in terms that a 1A, 1B, 1C, 1E or 1F licence does not authorise work with a dog and that 1A or 1F does not authorise cash-in-transit.
- Describe yourself as a security consultant on the strength of an installation licence. Selling security methods and acting as a consultant who identifies and analyses security risks is class 2A, while selling, installing, maintaining, repairing and servicing security equipment is class 2C. They're different endorsements.
- Induce a contract with a claim you cannot support. Section 33 makes it an offence for a licensee to use a false, misleading or deceptive statement, representation or promise, or to wilfully conceal a material fact, to induce somebody into an agreement connected with a security activity.
What it lets you say
- Name the classes you hold. Section 9 sets out master, class 1 and class 2 licences and allows them to be combined into a composite licence, so a business that guards and installs can hold both and say so.
- Write a page for each activity your endorsements cover, in the words a buyer types. Crowd control, cash-in-transit, monitoring centre operations, patrol with a dog and armed guarding are separate authorisations under section 11 and separate searches.
- Say plainly that monitoring is guarding. Operating a monitoring centre is class 1E under section 11, not a class 2 installation endorsement, which is why an installer who wants to monitor what they fit needs a composite licence.
- Be clear about where selling stops and installing starts. Section 4 carves basic household and automotive security items sold at approved classes of retail outlets out of the definition of a security activity, while installing, maintaining, repairing or servicing that same equipment stays inside it.
The Act applies in New South Wales, and every other state licenses this industry under its own legislation with its own classes, so a page that names a class number is a page about New South Wales. We check which regime applies to you before writing anything, and the same Act requires the licence number in any advertisement, with an electronic advertisement allowed to carry a direct link to it instead. Security Industry Act 1997 (NSW)
How our security company SEO works
Four steps, in this order, because the map pack usually moves before anything else does.
-
Read your licence
We start with your master licence and your class endorsements, and list the activities you're authorised to advertise. That list decides which pages exist.
-
Fix the Business Profile
Categories, service areas, services, photographs and reviews, so the searches that are settled in the map pack start returning you.
-
Write the service and site pages
One page per authorised service, one per kind of site you protect, in the words the demand table says people actually type.
-
Measure by service, not by ranking
Enquiries tagged by the service and the site type they came from, so the next page is chosen on evidence.

Security Company SEO Questions
We guard and we install. Do we really need two sets of pages?
Yes, and the demand is the reason rather than the theory. Equipment somebody wants installed is 6,100 searches a month and the guarding head terms are 5,500, so the two halves are almost the same size, and they're searched by different people asking different questions. A facilities manager pricing overnight patrols and a homeowner pricing a camera install don't read the same page. The licence classes split the same way, which is a useful check that you have drawn the line in the right place.
Can you get us ranking for security cameras?
Almost certainly not, and we would rather say so. Security cameras alone is 26,000 searches a month and it's a shopping search: the results are retailers and marketplaces selling a product. Across the whole industry 32,450 of 46,270 monthly searches are the hardware itself, which is 70.1 per cent of everything. Competing there with a service page is competing with a business model. The winnable half is the 6,100 a month who want the equipment installed, and the 5,500 who want people.
Why does so much of this depend on Google Business Profile?
Because most of the guarding demand names nothing. Five phrases, security guard, security companies, security services, security company and security guards, are 4,250 searches a month between them, which is 77.3 per cent of the guarding head terms, and not one of them says what needs protecting or where. Searches like that return a map pack, so the profile is what decides whether a caller sees you at all. The website then has to answer the question the map pack couldn't.
Do you need to see our licence before you start?
Yes. Section 7(2) of the Security Industry Act 1997 makes it an offence to carry on a security activity without a licence that authorises that particular activity, and section 33 covers misleading statements used to win a contract. So the first thing we do is list the activities your master licence and class endorsements actually authorise, and the pages describe those and nothing else. If you hold a composite licence covering both guarding and equipment, that is worth saying on the page, because most of your competitors hold one or the other.
Should we write pages for every suburb we patrol?
No. A page per suburb with the name swapped is the fastest way to build a set of pages that rank for nothing and read as spam to a reader. A security company usually covers a metropolitan area rather than a suburb, and the searches reflect that: the city terms carry real volume while suburb-level security searches mostly don't. Service areas belong in the Business Profile, and the pages belong to services and site types.
How much does SEO for a security company cost?
There is no published Australian benchmark for the security sector specifically, so we will not invent one. The widest figure we can point to is an Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers in 2023, where the most common monthly retainer worldwide was US$500 to US$1,000 a month. What moves the price is how many services and site types you want to compete for, whether you are chasing guarding, installation or both, how contested your city is, and the state of your Business Profile. We scope each business before quoting. For the national picture, see the national SEO cost ranges.
What is the difference between alarm monitoring and alarm installation, for SEO?
They're two searches and, in New South Wales, two licence classes. Fitting and servicing an alarm is class 2C, while operating a monitoring centre is class 1E, which sits with the guarding licences. Alarm monitoring and back to base monitoring are 450 searches a month between them and they're usually asked by somebody who already has a system. If you monitor what you install, that's a page of its own and a real differentiator, because most installers hand monitoring to somebody else.
Our biggest jobs come from tenders and referrals. Is search worth it?
It's worth it for the jobs that don't come that way, and for what a buyer finds when they check you. A procurement officer who has your name from a referral will still search it, and what they find is your Business Profile, your reviews and whichever page best explains the service they need. Search also reaches the buyers nobody has referred you to: 1,810 searches a month name a specific kind of site, and those are people who already know what they need protected.
Can you write the content, or do we have to?
We write it, and we send it to you before anything is published. In this industry that review matters more than most, because the copy has to stay inside the activities your licence authorises. You tell us what you actually do on a shift and we turn it into pages; you're the only one who can confirm what's accurate about your operation.
How will we know it is working?
By enquiries recorded against the service and the site type they came from, not by a ranking report. Calls and forms are tagged so you can see whether the construction site page, the mobile patrol page or the map pack produced each one. Rankings are a means to that, and on their own they tell you nothing about whether the phone rang.
