What is SEO for removalists?

SEO for a removalist is the work of being found by somebody who has decided to move but has not yet decided who is moving them. That person is not standing at a kerb in a panic. They are at a desk, usually weeks ahead, typing a city name and comparing. So the shape of this market is different from an emergency trade: the three capital city searches alone are larger than every near-me search put together, and the specific jobs a removalist is actually best at (pianos, offices, packing, backloading, storage) have almost no pages written about them by anyone. That means a real page for each area you cover, a page for each kind of move, a complete Business Profile at the depot, and quoting and insurance claims written so they hold up, because the Australian Consumer Law is specific about both and this industry has already been penalised over its advertising.

Usually moves first
A Business Profile and a real page for each area your trucks cover

A page for each kind of move, in the words people actually search

Booked moves and quote requests, not rankings

Why removalists lose booked moves

Most removalist businesses we speak to have the same four problems, and none of them shows up in a rankings report.

Site auditExample

What people search for, against what the site answers

One independent removalist

What people search for, against what the site answers, One independent removalist (Example)
What people search for, and what the site hasSearches a month
Removalists and moving company, the national terms (the home page) 5200
The cities you actually cover (one Areas We Service list) 9600
Near me, settled in the map pack (a Business Profile) 6900
Man with a van and small moves (no page) 3400
Interstate and backloading (one line on a Services page) 2400
Pianos, offices, packing and storage (no page) 2000
What a move costs and how to plan one (no page) 2350
Total new patients31850
The page counts are an example. The search volumes are real and are the ones in the table below. The shape is the point: the site has a page for the one term it is least likely to win, and nothing of its own for the 26,650 searches a month underneath it that it could.
  • This isn't an emergency trade, and the search data says so

Removalists near me and movers near me come to 6,900 searches a month between them. The three capital city terms (removalists melbourne, removalists sydney and removalists brisbane) come to 9,600. A person locked out of a house searches near me on a phone at the kerb and picks whoever is closest. A person moving house searches a city name at a desk, weeks ahead, opens five tabs and compares. Most removalist marketing is built for the first behaviour, and the larger and earlier half of the demand goes to whoever wrote a page about that city.

  • Your service area is a list, not a set of pages

Nearly every removalist site answers the whole geography question with one Areas We Service page carrying a column of suburb names. That page competes properly for none of them, and it tells a person nothing they wanted to know: whether you actually run that route, what the access is like in those buildings, whether you charge travel from the depot. The cities alone are 9,600 searches a month, and that is before the suburb and corridor terms underneath them.

  • Every job you're best at has no page

Piano removalists is searched 1,100 times a month, office removalists 500, packing services 300, backloading removalists 200 and storage and removals 100. Add man with a van at 3,400 and interstate removalists at 2,200 and that is 7,800 searches a month from people who have already decided what they need and are only choosing who does it. On most removalist sites all of it resolves to a single Services page with a paragraph each, or to nothing at all.

  • The claims on your site are the ones the law is actually about

Fully insured, no hidden fees, and an hourly rate that is not what anybody pays. NSW Fair Trading states plainly that removalists are not required by law to provide insurance for a customer’s property during a move, and that most removalist companies only have insurance covering their own vehicle. The ACCC states that the consumer guarantees cannot be taken away by anything a business says or does, and names saying you are not responsible for problems as one of the ways businesses try. And this industry has been penalised for its advertising: in July 2015 a removalist paid $30,600 in infringement notices over fabricated testimonials.

How Australians search for a removalist

The searches Australians make every month, grouped by how much the person has already decided, with the page that wins each one.

How Australians search for a removalist
SearchSearches a month, AustraliaWhat wins it
Moving house, with no job named yet
removalists near me 5,800 The map pack, so a complete Business Profile at the depot
removalists melbourne 4,300 A real page about moving in that city, not a suburb list
removalists 3,900 The national aggregators and quote comparison sites
man with a van 3,400 A page about small moves, priced and scoped as its own service
removalists sydney 3,300 A city page plus a profile at each depot you run from
interstate removalists 2,200 A page per corridor: what you run, how often, and the transit time
removalists brisbane 2,000 The same city page treatment, written about that market
moving company 1,300 The same national set, in a second phrasing
two men and a truck 1,300 A brand term, so a page on what a two-person crew actually covers
movers near me 1,100 The map pack again, in the phrasing Australians use less often
furniture removalists 1,100 A page on handling, protection and what you won't carry
house movers 600 The same page as a full household move, in a third phrasing
cheap removalists 350 Price comparison sites, by construction
local removalists 250 The area pages, which is what local actually means here
best removalists 200 Reviews and third-party lists, not a page you can write
A move somebody has already specified
piano removalists 1,100 A page on equipment, crew size, stairs and insurance for one item
office removalists 500 A page written for a business move, including out of hours
packing services 300 A page on what packing includes, priced separately from the move
backloading removalists 200 A page on how backloading works and what the trade-off is
storage and removals 100 A page on storage between legs, and what covers goods there
Price and planning, before anybody books
moving house checklist 1,300 A genuinely useful checklist, which almost nobody has written
removalist cost 400 A page on what actually drives the price of a move
removalist quotes 350 A quote page that explains the variables before it asks for details
how much do removalists cost 300 The same page as removalist cost, in a question phrasing

The three groups come to 31,100, 2,200 and 2,350 searches a month, 35,650 in total, and the shape of that table is the opposite of an emergency trade. Removalists near me and movers near me come to 6,900, which is 19% of the demand. The three capital city terms come to 9,600, which is 27%. So the city searches are larger than the near-me searches, which isn't true of locksmiths, plumbers or any callout trade, and it is because a move is planned weeks ahead from a desk rather than decided in a panic at a kerb. A Business Profile alone therefore wins the smaller and later half of this market. The other thing in the table is moving house checklist: 1,300 searches a month at a Keyword Difficulty of 4 out of 100, the largest single term in the planning group, and the one almost nobody in the industry has answered. It's searched by the same person who books a removalist weeks later.

Average monthly Google searches in Australia and Keyword Difficulty, from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, pulled 13 September 2026. Searches with no reported volume are left out rather than estimated.

What our SEO service for removalists includes

Six workstreams, run together, each one aimed at a booked move rather than a ranking.

  • A page for every area you actually cover

One real page per city and per corridor you genuinely run, written about moving in that place: which depot serves it, what the access and parking are usually like, whether travel is charged from the depot, and what a move of that size there typically involves. Not a column of suburb names on an Areas We Service page. The three capital city terms alone are 9,600 searches a month.

  • A page for each kind of move

Small moves and man with a van, full household removals, interstate, backloading, office and commercial, pianos and specialist items, packing, and storage between legs. Each on its own page, each carrying both names people use for it rather than only the one on your rate card, and each answering the question that actually stops the booking: what it includes, what it doesn't, and what it turns on.

  • Google Business Profile at the depot

Removalists near me and movers near me are searched 6,900 times a month and are settled in the map pack before anybody opens a website. That needs a complete, correct profile at each depot you operate from, with the right primary category, the services you genuinely offer listed separately, real hours, a defined service area, and photographs of your own trucks and crew rather than stock imagery.

  • Reviews and response

Reviews decide a great deal about who appears in the map pack, and unlike a health or cosmetic business you're free to ask for them, publish them and reply to them. A move is stressful and removalists collect more strongly worded reviews than most trades, so answering them properly in public is worth more here than in almost any industry we work in. We set the profiles up so reviews keep arriving after a job and somebody is actually answering them.

  • AI search visibility

People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode how backloading works, what a two-bedroom move costs, whether their goods are covered in transit and what to do six weeks out. We structure your pages, schema and listings so those answers can find, trust and cite you.

    How AI search visibility works
  • Booked moves, not rankings

A booked move is the conversion, so that's what we track. Every quote request, enquiry and call tied back to the search that produced it in GA4, split by area and by kind of move, so you can see which pages fill which weeks and which jobs and what each one is genuinely bringing in.

Quoting and insuring a removal in Australia

Removals is not a licensed trade, so there is no licence number to publish and no regulator setting rules for the job itself. What governs it is the Australian Consumer Law, and two things in it catch removalist websites harder than any other industry we write for: what you may say about insurance, and what you may say about your own liability.

What we won’t publish

  • Fully insured, on a page that never says what's actually insured
  • A line saying you are not responsible for damage, which the ACCC says businesses cannot rely on
  • An hourly rate presented as the price when a callout fee, a minimum or stair charges are unavoidable
  • An implied industry accreditation the business doesn't hold
  • A testimonial nobody wrote, which is the one thing a removalist has already been penalised for
  • A claim about crew, fleet or experience with nothing behind it

What we do instead

  • Insurance written out: what your own cover is, and what transit cover would add
  • The three service guarantees stated as your obligations rather than disclaimed
  • Every unavoidable charge inside the quoted figure, with the variables named separately
  • Accreditation shown only where it is genuinely held, and pointed at the register
  • Reviews earned and answered in public, on the platforms that actually host them
  • Claims about your crew, fleet and experience that the page can support

NSW Fair Trading’s own guidance for a person choosing a removalist says that removalists are not required by law to provide insurance for your property during a move, and that most removalist companies only have insurance that covers their vehicle if an accident occurs. That is the single widest gap between what a removalist website implies and what a customer is actually buying. The same guidance says an accredited removalist will have public liability insurance and can provide transit insurance for all goods being moved, and that transit cover insures goods while they are being packed and moved and includes any storage. On advertising it says removalists are not allowed to make false or misleading representations about their services, that advertising must be truthful, accurate and easy to understand, and that any statement relating to qualifications or experience should be supported. The ACCC’s position is that the basic rights covered by the consumer guarantees cannot be taken away by anything a business says or does, and it names saying you are not responsible for problems with a service as one of the ways businesses try, and as against the law. For a service those guarantees are due care and skill, fitness for a particular purpose, and supply within a reasonable time. The ACCC does enforce advertising in this industry: in July 2015 the removalist Citymove paid $30,600 in infringement notices after using fabricated customer identities to post two testimonials on Google+ and one on YouTube. Our writing supports your obligations, it does not replace them. NSW Fair Trading: choosing a removalist

How our SEO process for removalists works

Five steps, in order. The pace is set by your service area, the jobs you take and the state of your site, so the plan sets it rather than a template.

  1. Audit

Search Console, a Business Profile check at every depot, what ranks for each city and each kind of move you take, your quote form and how much of it search engines can see, and a pass over how your pricing and insurance are described.

  2. Growth plan

What to fix and what to build, in order of the booked moves each is likely to bring in.

  3. Build

Area pages, pages for each kind of move, the profiles, technical fixes and quote tracking.

  4. Compound

Content, reviews and authority, built on what the data shows is working.

  5. Report

Against booked moves and quote requests, not rankings.

How much SEO for removalists costs in Australia

Published Australian agency figures put SEO for trades and home services businesses at $1,500 to $2,500+ a month, and most Australian small businesses pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month. No regulator sets SEO prices in Australia, so these are market figures, not a quote.

  • $1,500 to $2,500+

a month, what Australian agencies publish for trades and home services businesses

Published Australian agency rate card, verified September 2026

  • $1,500 to $3,500

a month, where most Australian small businesses sit

Two Australian SEO cost guides agree, verified September 2026

  • US$500 to US$1,000

a month, the most common agency retainer worldwide

Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers, 2023

What moves the price

  • How large a service area you genuinely cover, and how many depots sit behind it
  • How many kinds of move need a page of their own, and how many names each is searched by
  • How contested the cities you run in are, which varies a great deal
  • Whether you compete on local moves, interstate corridors, commercial work or all three
  • The state of your site, your Business Profile and your quote tracking

There is no table of job prices on this page, and that is deliberate. A two-bedroom move across one suburb, a backloaded interstate leg and a full pack-and-move with storage in between are different products that happen to share a truck, and no regulator or industry body publishes a national figure for any of them. The figures that do circulate come from the quote comparison sites themselves. The useful question is what an average job is worth to you and how many a month the work has to bring in to pay for itself, which is what the calculator below is for.

SEO For Removalists Questions

Do you lock removalists into contracts?

No. We work without lock-in contracts. If the work isn't paying its way for your business, you're free to stop.

Can I say my business is fully insured?

Only if the page says what is actually insured, because the two usually are not the same thing. NSW Fair Trading tells consumers plainly that removalists are not required by law to provide insurance for their property during a move, and that most removalist companies only have insurance that covers their vehicle if an accident occurs. So a customer reading fully insured will usually assume their goods are covered, and on many removalist websites that is not what the business actually holds. If you carry public liability, say so and say what it covers. If you can arrange transit cover, say what it insures and when it applies. Both are stronger claims than fully insured, and neither invites the complaint.

My terms say I am not responsible for damage. Can the website say that?

Not in a way that suggests it removes your obligations, because it does not. The ACCC’s position is that the basic rights covered by the consumer guarantees cannot be taken away by anything a business says or does, and it lists saying you are not responsible for problems with a service as one of the ways businesses try, and as against the law. For a service the guarantees are due care and skill, fitness for a particular purpose, and supply within a reasonable time. Limits on liability that the law does allow are a matter for your lawyer and your contract. What the marketing page should not do is present a blanket disclaimer as if it settles the question.

Do the consumer guarantees cover an office move?

Usually not, and almost nobody in this industry knows it. The ACCC lists it among the exceptions: services to transport or store goods for business purposes are not covered by the consumer guarantees. So a household move gets the three service guarantees and a commercial move generally does not, which means the contract carries far more of the weight. That has a practical consequence for how a commercial removals page is written. It should be clearer, not vaguer, about what is covered, what is excluded and what happens if something is damaged, because there is no statutory backstop sitting behind it.

Do I need a licence to run a removal business?

There is no removalist licence in the way there is for plumbing or electrical work, which is why you will not see a licence number on a removalist advertisement. NSW Fair Trading’s own guidance for somebody choosing a removalist points them at industry accreditation, a written itemised quote, the contract and their own insurance instead. Accreditation through the Australian Furniture Removers Association is voluntary and covers equipment, vehicles, premises and staff training, and the association publishes a register, so it is worth showing if you hold it. It is not worth implying if you do not.

Is removalists near me worth chasing?

Yes, but it's the smaller half. Removalists near me and movers near me come to 6,900 searches a month in Australia. The three capital city terms, removalists melbourne, removalists sydney and removalists brisbane, come to 9,600. That's the reverse of a callout trade, and the reason is behavioural: somebody locked out searches near me on a phone at the kerb, while somebody moving house searches a city name at a desk weeks ahead and compares. So the profile matters and it isn't the strategy on its own.

Should I build a page for every suburb I move to?

No. Search engines treat sets of near-identical location pages as doorway pages, and for a removalist they also bring in enquiries for routes you would rather not run. The test we apply is whether the page could only have been written about that place: which depot serves it, what the access and parking are usually like, whether travel is charged from the depot, and what a move there typically involves. A city or a corridor usually passes that test. A suburb four streets from another one usually doesn't.

Why would I write a moving house checklist?

Because it's the largest single search in the planning group and it's searched by exactly the person you want. Moving house checklist is searched 1,300 times a month in Australia and Ahrefs rates the difficulty of ranking for it at 4 out of 100, which is close to the softest ground in the entire table. The person typing it has decided to move and hasn't yet chosen a removalist. Almost nobody in the industry has written a genuinely useful one, which is why the difficulty is so low. It isn't a booking today; it's how you are already familiar when they ask for a quote.

Are interstate and backloading the same page?

No, and running them together is one of the more common mistakes we see. Interstate removalists is searched 2,200 times a month and backloading removalists 200, and they attract different customers with different expectations. Interstate is usually a dated, full-service move on a corridor you run. Backloading is a price-led decision with a trade-off on timing that has to be explained properly or it turns into a complaint. Each deserves its own page, and the backloading page in particular should be explicit about what is and is not guaranteed about the date.

How do I compete with the quote comparison sites?

Mostly by not competing with them where they are strongest. The bare national terms are built for aggregation and the comparison sites are the natural answer to them. What those sites do badly is anything specific: a city, a corridor, a piano, an office move out of hours, what storage between legs actually costs. Those searches come to 26,650 a month between them, they convert better because the person has already decided what they need, and a comparison site can't write them with any authority because it doesn't own a truck.

Do reviews matter for a removalist?

More than for most trades. Reviews are a strong signal in the map pack, and unlike a health or cosmetic business you are free to ask for them, publish them and reply to them. A move is one of the more stressful things a household does, so removalists collect more strongly worded reviews than almost any local trade, and a public reply is read by everybody comparing you afterwards. What you cannot do is write them yourself. In July 2015 the removalist Citymove paid $30,600 in infringement notices after the ACCC found it had used fabricated customer identities to post two testimonials on Google+ and one on YouTube.

How long does SEO take for a removalist?

It depends on things we can look at rather than guess. How large a service area you genuinely cover and whether each depot already has a correct Business Profile. How contested the cities you run in are. How many kinds of move are worth a page of their own and whether any of them exist today. And whether you are starting with a site that has any authority behind it. We tell you what we think drives it for your business in the growth plan rather than quoting an industry average.

What does SEO for a removalist cost in Australia?

Published Australian agency figures put trades and home services businesses at $1,500 to $2,500 or more a month, and most Australian small businesses pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month. The most common agency retainer worldwide is US$500 to US$1,000 a month, from an Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers in 2023. No regulator sets SEO prices in Australia, so those are market figures rather than a quote. What moves it for a removalist is the size of your service area, how many kinds of move need a page of their own, how contested your cities are, and the state of your site and quote tracking.

How do we measure which SEO enquiries become booked moves?

Keep quote requests and booked moves as separate measures, then compare them by route and type of move. Calls and forms show interest, while your booking records show which enquiries became work. We review the available source information alongside those records and make gaps clear, rather than assuming every website enquiry became a booking or every booking came from SEO.
