What is mechanic SEO?
Mechanic SEO is the work of getting a workshop found when someone searches for a mechanic, a logbook service, a pink slip or a specific repair on Google, Google Maps and AI assistants. It covers the Google Business Profile that decides whether you appear in the map pack, a page for each service you sell, the state terminology your customers actually type, and tracking that ties a booking back to the page that produced it.

Why mechanics lose bookings online
Most workshops we speak to have the same four problems, and none of them shows up in a rankings report.
Bookings by source, last month
| Source, as entered when the car was booked in | Bookings |
|---|---|
| Regular customer | 71 |
| Word of mouth | 22 |
| Drove past | 13 |
| “Google” | 44 |
| Not recorded | 31 |
| Total new patients | 181 |
-
A Business Profile carrying the whole business
Almost every search that matters here happens in the map pack. Wrong categories, an old set of hours, no booking link and a thin review history quietly hand the car to the workshop two streets over, and no amount of site work makes up for it.
-
One page listing every service
Logbook servicing, pink slips, brakes, air conditioning, auto electrical and pre-purchase inspections are separate searches with separate intent. A single “our services” page competes for none of them properly.
-
Copy written in the wrong state’s words
The same inspection is a pink slip in New South Wales and a roadworthy certificate in Victoria and Queensland. A page that only says “safety inspection” is invisible to both.
-
Bookings nobody can trace
Most of this work is booked over the phone. If calls aren't tracked, the enquiry that came from a brake repair page and the one that came from a regular look identical on the sheet.
How people search for a mechanic in Australia
The searches Australians make every month, grouped by what the customer is trying to do, with the page or asset that wins each one.
| Search | Searches a month, Australia | What wins it |
|---|---|---|
| Looking for a workshop | ||
| mechanic near me | 31,000 | The Maps pack and a complete Business Profile |
| car service near me | 11,000 | The same profile, plus a real servicing page |
| mechanic | 10,000 | Hard. Your homepage, built around where you are |
| mobile mechanic | 8,800 | A mobile page, if you actually go to the customer |
| auto electrician near me | 12,000 | An auto electrical page and the right category |
| car service | 4,200 | Hard. The servicing page, written for this phrasing |
| Inspections, and the words change by state | ||
| pink slip | 7,800 | A pink slip page, if you're an authorised inspector in NSW |
| roadworthy certificate | 3,700 | The same job in Victoria and Queensland, its own page |
| pre purchase car inspection | 2,500 | An inspection page with what you check and report |
| The jobs themselves | ||
| wheel alignment | 6,400 | An alignment page with what you use and when to do it |
| logbook service | 1,900 | A logbook page that answers the warranty question |
| car aircon regas | 1,800 | An air conditioning page, priced honestly |
The difficulty scores say something unusual about this industry, and it's good news for a single workshop. “Mechanic near me” is 31,000 searches a month at a difficulty of 0 out of 100, and “car service near me” another 11,000, also at 0. The generic versions of the same words are the hard ones: “mechanic” sits at 54 and “car service” at 56. In other words the demand that actually books a car is decided by your Google Business Profile and your reviews, not by how much authority your domain has. That's a fight a good local workshop can win. The second thing on this table is the state terminology: “pink slip” is 7,800 searches a month and “roadworthy certificate” is 3,700, and they're the same inspection under two names. A page that only says “safety inspection” catches neither.
Average monthly searches, keyword difficulty and cost per click for Australia, from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, pulled 12 September 2026. Searches with no reported volume are left out rather than estimated.
What our mechanic SEO service includes
Six workstreams, run together, each one aimed at a booked car rather than a ranking.
-
Google Business Profile and Maps
This is where “mechanic near me” is won, and 31,000 Australians a month type it. Categories that match the work you actually take, hours that hold up, a booking link that works, photographs of your own workshop, and the licence details a customer can check.
-
A page for each service you sell
Logbook servicing, inspections, brakes, air conditioning, auto electrical, tyres and alignment, pre-purchase inspections. Each page covers what's included, what usually changes the price, and how long the car is with you.
-
Your licence and your workshop, shown properly
In New South Wales it is an offence to advertise a repair business without a repairer licence, and the fine reaches $110,000 on prosecution. Showing your licence details is also the fastest trust signal you own, so we put them where a customer and a search engine can both see them.
-
Service area pages, done properly
Only for suburbs you genuinely draw from, and each written about that area rather than find-and-replaced. We don't build sets of near-identical suburb pages. Search engines treat those as doorway pages.
-
AI search visibility
People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode what a logbook service should cost and who does pink slips near them. We structure your pages, schema and listings so those answers can find, trust and cite your workshop.
How AI search visibility works -
Call and booking tracking
Cars are booked in over the phone, often while the workshop is loud and busy. Calls, including missed calls, and online bookings tracked in GA4, so you can see which service and which suburb are actually filling the hoist.

Marketing inside the motor vehicle repair rules
Repairing cars in New South Wales takes two licences, one for the business and one for each qualified tradesperson, under the Motor Dealers and Repairers Act 2013. Advertising a repair business without one carries a $5,500 fine or prosecution to a maximum of $110,000. Alongside that sits the Motor Vehicle Information Scheme, the first right to repair legislation in Australia, which is what makes an independent workshop able to compete with a dealership at all. This is where we draw the line.
What we won’t do
- Advertise repair work you aren't licensed to carry out
- List a service class no certified tradesperson on your team holds
- Publish a fixed price for a job whose real price depends on the car
- Write or arrange reviews, or hide the ones you would rather not have
- Claim a manufacturer approval or an accreditation you don't hold
What we do instead
- Your licensee name and licence number, where a customer can check them
- Service pages that match the classes you're actually licensed for
- The state words your customers use, pink slip or roadworthy, said plainly
- Honest pricing, with what moves it and what's quoted after inspection
- One review request, sent to every customer at the same point
We write workshop copy to the Motor Dealers and Repairers Act 2013 and the Australian Consumer Law. Licensing differs by state, so check your own before anything goes live. This supports your obligations as a business; it does not replace them, and it is not legal advice. NSW Government guide for motor vehicle repairers

Mechanic SEO Questions
Do you lock mechanics into contracts?
No. We work without lock-in contracts. If the work isn't paying its way for your business, you're free to stop.
How much does SEO for mechanics cost in Australia?
There is no published Australian benchmark for the automotive sector specifically, so we will not invent one. The widest figure we can point to is an Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers in 2023, where the most common monthly retainer worldwide was US$500 to US$1,000 a month. What moves the price is how many services and suburbs you want to compete for, how contested those suburbs are, and the state of your Business Profile. We scope each workshop before quoting. Our guide to SEO costs in Australia has the national ranges, with the date they were verified.
Do we need a licence to advertise our workshop in NSW?
Yes. NSW requires two licences to repair vehicles: a motor vehicle repairer licence for the business, and a tradesperson certificate for each qualified worker doing that class of work. Advertising or running a repair business without a licence carries a fine of $5,500 or prosecution with a maximum penalty of $110,000, and further unlicensed conduct can reach $110,000, twelve months imprisonment, or both. Licensing differs by state, so check your own before you advertise anything.
Does the law require our licence number on our website?
Not in the way it does for some building trades. The NSW signage rule is about your premises: you must display a sign at your registered place of business, or fixed to your vehicle if you are mobile, carrying the licensee name and the words “licence number” followed by the number itself, and getting it wrong is a $550 fine or prosecution up to $2,200. That rule does not extend to your website. We put the details on the site anyway, because it is one of the few things a customer can actually verify about you before they hand over their car.
Why can we not rank for “mechanic” on its own?
Because it is one of the harder terms on the board, at 54 out of 100 on Ahrefs difficulty, against 0 for “mechanic near me”. That is the useful thing about this industry: the search that actually books a car is the easy one. “Mechanic near me” is 31,000 searches a month in Australia and “car service near me” another 11,000, and both are won in the map pack rather than by domain authority. Chase those first.
Should we write “pink slip” or “roadworthy certificate”?
Whichever one your customers type, and if you operate across borders, both, on separate pages. “Pink slip” is 7,800 searches a month in Australia and is the New South Wales term; “roadworthy certificate” is 3,700 and is what Victoria and Queensland call it. They're the same inspection under two names, and a page that only says “safety inspection” is invisible to both.
Are car manufacturers required to give us repair information?
Yes, for most cars. The Motor Vehicle Information Scheme is mandatory under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and is described by the ACCC as the first right to repair legislation in Australia. It requires data providers to offer service and repair information to all Australian repairers at a price that does not exceed fair market value, and it covers passenger vehicles and light goods vehicles manufactured on or after 1 January 2002. It does not cover motorbikes, farm, construction or heavy vehicles, motor homes or buses. The Australian Automotive Service and Repair Authority is the scheme adviser.
Is the information sharing scheme actually enforced?
It is being tested now. On 21 August 2026 the ACCC announced it had commenced proceedings in the Federal Court against Subaru (Aust) Pty Ltd, alleging that between 1 July 2022 and 31 August 2024 it did not offer independent repairers the same scheme information it gave its own dealerships. ACCC Commissioner Luke Woodward said it is the first court proceeding the ACCC has taken for alleged breaches of the scheme. These are allegations and the matter has not been decided; the ACCC is seeking declarations, penalties and costs.
Can we tell customers their consumer rights are not affected by servicing with us?
You can say what the ACCC says, and it is worth saying carefully. Consumer guarantees are automatic under the Australian Consumer Law and cannot be taken away by anything a business says or does, and voluntary warranties such as a manufacturer or extended warranty are in addition to those rights and cannot replace, change or take away from them. The ACCC also states plainly that consumers can choose an independent repairer, because it is mandatory for manufacturers to make service and repair information available. What we do not put on your site is a blanket claim about a particular manufacturer’s voluntary warranty, because those terms are that manufacturer’s and we have not read them.
Do we need a page for every suburb we cover?
No, and building one is a good way to get penalised. Near-identical suburb pages are treated as doorway pages. What works is a genuine page for each area you really draw from, written about that area and the kind of work that comes out of it.
Can you get our workshop into ChatGPT and AI Mode answers?
Nobody can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and it is worth being wary of anyone who does. What we can do is strengthen the signals those answers draw on: clear service pages, an accurate business listing, a genuine review history, structured data, and mentions on sites AI tools already trust.
How do we measure whether SEO is bringing workshop bookings?
Start with calls and online booking enquiries from organic search, then compare them with the cars your workshop actually books in. Record the service requested and where the customer came from when that information is available. We keep enquiries separate from confirmed bookings, so more calls or website visits aren't automatically reported as more work on the hoist.
