What is SEO for locksmiths?

SEO for a locksmith is the work of being the one who gets called when someone is standing at a door they cannot open. Most of that is decided in the map pack rather than on a website, so it starts with the Google Business Profile, the service area and the reviews behind it. The rest is a page for each job you actually do, because the specific work is searched by name and a single Services page competes for none of it properly. On a locksmith site it also covers what your advertising is required to carry, because in New South Wales you are licensed by the police rather than by Fair Trading, and the advertising rules say so in terms that name websites and social media.

Callouts and booked jobs, not rankings

Why locksmiths lose callouts online

Most locksmiths we speak to have the same four problems, and none of them shows up in a rankings report.

Site auditExample

What people search for, against what the site answers

One locksmith business

What people search for, against what the site answers, One locksmith business (Example)
What people search for, and what the site hasSearches a month
Lockouts and emergency callouts (has a page) 33850
Car keys and car locks (one line on Services) 5240
Key cutting (no page) 3100
Commercial, master key and restricted systems (no page) 970
Smart and digital locks (no page) 350
Safes (no page) 200
Total new patients43710
The page counts are an example. The search volumes are real and are the ones in the table below. The shape is the point: the site has a page for the emergency, which is the one job every locksmith site builds a page for, and nothing for the five underneath it, which are searched 9,860 times a month between them.
  • Two thirds of the demand never names the job

Locksmith near me is searched 20,000 times a month in Australia and locksmith another 9,300. Between them that is 29,300 of the 45,300 searches in the table below, and neither one tells you whether the person has locked themselves out, lost a car key or wants a master key system for an office. Those searches are settled in the map pack, usually on a phone, often before anyone reads a word of a website. If your Business Profile is thin, the best site in your city never gets looked at.

  • The same job has three names and your site uses one

Car key replacement, automotive locksmith and auto locksmith are the same job, searched 2,000, 800 and 600 times a month. Key cutting and key cutting near me are 1,200 and 1,900. Rekey locks and change locks are the same conversation. A page written only in the phrase you happen to use on the van is invisible to everyone searching the others, and three thin pages for one job compete with each other instead of with anybody else.

  • Half of what you do needs a police licence and half of it doesn't

In New South Wales a locksmith is licensed by the Commissioner of Police, not by Fair Trading, and the advertising rules that come with that licence are specific about websites and social media. But the exemption for vehicle work means a purely automotive job sits outside the scheme entirely. Most locksmith sites we audit state neither position anywhere, so the licence that took years to earn is invisible on the one page a customer checks before calling.

  • The job arrives as a phone call and nothing records the search

A locksmith is hired in a phone call made standing in a car park, and nothing in that call records which search produced it. So search looks like it does nothing, the map pack gets no credit for the work it did, and whichever channel was touched last takes it instead.

How people search for a locksmith in Australia

The searches Australians make every month, grouped by what the person is actually trying to do, with the page that wins each one.

How people search for a locksmith in Australia
SearchSearches a month, AustraliaWhat wins it
Someone who needs a locksmith now
locksmith near me 20,000 A complete Business Profile in the right service area
locksmith 9,300 A profile with the right primary category and real hours
locksmith sydney 1,500 A city page backed by a profile that covers it
emergency locksmith 1,300 A page that states your hours and your callout area plainly
24 hour locksmith 600 Accurate opening hours on the profile, not a claim on a page
emergency locksmith near me 600 Proximity, reviews and a profile that answers the phone
locksmith near me open now 350 Hours kept current, including public holidays
locked out of house 200 A page written for the situation, not for the trade
Car keys and car locks
car key replacement 2,000 A page per make you can actually cut and program
car locksmith 1,100 One page carrying all three names for this job
automotive locksmith 800 The same page, not a second one competing with it
auto locksmith 600 The same page again, in the third phrasing
key replacement 300 A page that separates car keys from house keys
car key cutting 250 A page on what you can cut on site and what you can't
car key programming 150 A page naming the equipment and the makes it covers
broken key extraction 40 A page on the job itself, which almost nobody writes
A planned job at a home or a business
key cutting near me 1,900 A profile with the service listed, plus a page
key cutting 1,200 The same page as key cutting near me, not a second one
commercial locksmith 700 A page written for a building manager, not a homeowner
mobile locksmith 700 A page that states your callout area and what you carry
residential locksmith 350 A page on the domestic jobs, separate from commercial
smart lock installation 350 A page naming the brands you install and support
master key system 200 A page for the specifier, with what the system does
safe locksmith 200 A page on opening, servicing and moving safes
door lock replacement 150 A page on the job, written for the person paying
rekey locks 150 One page covering rekeying and changing locks
change locks 100 The same page, because it's the same conversation
lock repair 90 A page that separates repair from replacement
restricted key system 70 A page for the systems you're licensed to supply
deadbolt installation 50 A page on the hardware you fit and to what standard

Two searches, locksmith near me at 20,000 and locksmith at 9,300, are 29,300 of the 45,300 a month in this table. That's two thirds of the demand in two phrases that name no job at all, and they're won in the map pack rather than on a website. The other 28 rows come to 16,000 between them, and that's the half a page can actually win. Check both figures still hold before adding a row.

Average monthly Google searches in Australia, from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, pulled 12 September 2026. Searches with no reported volume are left out rather than estimated.

What our SEO service for locksmiths includes

Six workstreams, run together, each one aimed at a booked job rather than a ranking.

  • Google Business Profile and Maps

This is where two thirds of the demand is settled, so it's where we start. The right primary category, every service you actually offer listed separately, hours that are true including public holidays, a service area that matches where you will really drive, and real photographs of the van and the team. For an emergency search it is the first thing anyone sees and very often the only thing.

  • A page for each job you do

Lockouts, car key replacement and programming, key cutting, rekeying, safes, master key and restricted systems, smart locks. Each on its own page, each carrying every name people use for that job rather than only the one on your van, and each written for the person paying rather than for the trade. This is where the 16,000 monthly searches that name a job are won.

  • Service area and callout radius

Only the areas you'll genuinely drive to, and each page written about that place: how far it is, what you cover there, and which jobs you can do on site. We don't build sets of near-identical suburb pages. Search engines treat those as doorway pages, and for a locksmith they also invite a callout you didn't want to take.

  • Reviews and response

Reviews decide a great deal about who appears in the map pack, and unlike a health or cosmetic business you're free to ask for them, publish them and reply to them. That's a real advantage over most of the industries we work in and most locksmiths don't use it. We set the profiles up so reviews keep arriving after a job and somebody is actually answering them.

  • AI search visibility

People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode what a locksmith should cost, whether a car key can be cut without the original and who covers their suburb after hours. We structure your pages, schema and listings so those answers can find, trust and cite you.

    How AI search visibility works
  • Call tracking and jobs booked

Calls are the conversion for a locksmith, so calls are what we track. Every call, form and booking tied back to the search that produced it in GA4, so you can compare what search delivered against the jobs you actually invoiced, rather than against a position in a report.

Results For Trade Businesses

Three trade businesses, three sets of figures, across SEO and Google Ads. None is a locksmith: Sydney Refrigeration Services is a refrigeration and air conditioning business, and the other two are a plumbing business and a water filtration business. All three are local, callout-driven and sold on a phone call, which is why they are the closest work we've published. Every number comes straight from that business’s own case study.

Advertising a locksmith business in New South Wales

A locksmith is not licensed by Fair Trading like a plumber or an electrician. In New South Wales you are licensed by the Commissioner of Police under the Security Industry Act 1997: a Class 2C licence for each person doing the work, and a master licence for the business providing them. That Act carries its own advertising provision, and it is the only one we deal with that names websites and social media in terms. It is also the reason we write these pages the way we do.

What we won’t publish

  • Any page or profile advertising locksmith work with no licence number on it and no direct link to one
  • A claim to hold a licence class or a master licence subclass we haven't seen evidence of
  • “Fully licensed and insured” as the only statement, with no number anywhere to check it against
  • A price or a callout fee stated in a way that isn't what the customer ends up paying
  • A 24 hour claim on a page while the Business Profile behind it says otherwise
  • Security or licensing wording on a page that only ever covers vehicle work

What we do instead

  • The licence number on the advertising itself, or a direct link straight to it, which is what the Act allows for an electronic advertisement
  • The same number on the Business Profile, the site and the social accounts, so all three agree
  • Your licence class and master licence subclass stated plainly, so a client can check them on the police register
  • Vehicle-only work written separately, because the exemption means it sits outside the scheme
  • Hours and callout areas that match the profile exactly, because the profile is what people act on
  • Which state’s regime applies checked before a word is written, because the licensing differs across Australia

The provision is section 32. Advertising that you carry on, or are willing to carry on, a security activity without holding a master licence carries up to 500 penalty units for a corporation, or 250 penalty units or imprisonment for six months or both for an individual. Advertising without the licence number on it carries up to 100 penalty units for a corporation and 50 for an individual. A penalty unit is $110 under the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999, so those are $55,000, $27,500 and $11,000 and $5,500. The Act defines an electronic advertisement to include one online, including on social media, and one sent by SMS or email, and it lets an electronic advertisement carry a direct link to the number instead of the number itself. Vehicle work is exempt: police have exempted locksmithing on any vehicle other than a campervan or motorhome, to the extent of that work, so a purely automotive locksmith sits outside this. The moment the job is a house or a business, it does not. This is the New South Wales position, read first-hand; the regime differs by state and we check which one binds you before we write. Our writing supports your obligations, it does not replace them. NSW Police: Class 2 security licences

How our SEO process for locksmiths works

Five steps, in order. The pace is set by your business, your site and your service area, so the plan sets it rather than a template.

  1. Audit

Search Console, your Business Profile and its service area, what ranks for every job you do across your patch, your site, your call tracking, and a pass over what your advertising currently states about your licence.

  2. Growth plan

What to fix and what to build, in order of the callouts each is likely to bring in.

  3. Build

The profile, the job and service area pages, technical fixes and call tracking.

  4. Compound

Content, reviews and authority, built on what the data shows is working.

  5. Report

Against callouts and jobs booked, not rankings.

How much SEO for locksmiths costs in Australia

Published Australian agency figures put SEO for trades and home services businesses at $1,500 to $2,500+ a month, and most Australian small businesses pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month. No regulator sets SEO prices in Australia, so these are market figures, not a quote.

  • $1,500 to $2,500+

a month, what Australian agencies publish for trades and home services businesses

Published Australian agency rate card, verified September 2026

  • $1,500 to $3,500

a month, where most Australian small businesses sit

Two Australian SEO cost guides agree, verified September 2026

  • US$500 to US$1,000

a month, the most common agency retainer worldwide

Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers, 2023

What moves the price

  • How many jobs need a page of their own, and how many names each is searched by
  • How large a service area you genuinely cover, and how many profiles sit behind it
  • How contested the map pack is in your city
  • Whether you compete on emergency work, commercial contracts or both
  • The state of your site, your Business Profile and your call tracking

There's no table of job prices on this page, and that's deliberate. A 2am lockout, a car key cut and programmed on the roadside and a restricted key system specified across an office building are different businesses that happen to share a trade, and no authority publishes a national figure for any of them. The useful question is what an average job is worth to you and how many a month the work has to bring in to pay for itself, which is what the calculator below is for.

SEO For Locksmiths Questions

Do you lock locksmiths into contracts?

No. We work without lock-in contracts. If the work isn't paying its way for your business, you're free to stop.

Do I need a licence to advertise locksmith work in New South Wales?

Yes, and the advertising itself is the offence. Section 32(1) of the Security Industry Act 1997 says a person must not advertise that they carry on, or are willing to carry on, a security activity unless they hold a master licence. The maximum is 500 penalty units for a corporation, or 250 penalty units or imprisonment for six months or both for an individual. At the $110 a penalty unit set by the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999, that is $55,000 and $27,500. Locksmithing is a Class 2C security activity, and the business providing the operatives needs the master licence.

Does my licence number have to be on my website?

Something has to be. Section 32(2) says any advertisement for a security activity must contain the licence number, and section 32(4) defines an electronic advertisement to include one online, including on social media, and one sent by SMS or email. Section 32(3) then allows an electronic advertisement to leave the number off if the public can readily and freely find it through a direct link from that advertisement. So a link to a page carrying the number satisfies it. Nothing at all does not.

I only do car keys. Do the same rules apply to me?

No, and this is the part most locksmith sites get wrong in one direction or the other. Police have exempted people who install, service, repair or manipulate locks, or carry on any other locksmithing activity, on any vehicle other than a campervan or motorhome, but only to the extent they are doing that work. A purely automotive locksmith therefore sits outside the licensing scheme. The moment the job is a house, a shop or an office, it doesn't, and a campervan isn't exempt either.

How do I get into the map pack for locksmith near me?

The profile does most of it: the right primary category, every service listed separately, hours that are actually true, a service area that matches where you drive, real photographs, and a steady flow of reviews. Proximity to the person searching is also a factor and nobody can change it, which is why the service area and where your profile is registered matter more for a locksmith than for almost any other trade. Anyone promising a fixed position is guessing.

Do I really need a page for every service?

For the jobs people search by name, yes. Car key replacement, key cutting, rekeying, safes, master key systems and smart locks come to 16,000 searches a month between them in the table above, and a single Services page with a list on it competes properly for none of them. It is also the half of the demand a website can win, because the other two thirds are settled in the map pack.

Should I build a page for every suburb I cover?

No. Sets of near-identical suburb pages are treated as doorway pages by search engines, and for a locksmith they have a second cost: they generate callout enquiries from places you didn't really want to drive to. We build pages only for the areas you genuinely cover, written about those places.

Do reviews matter for a locksmith?

A great deal, and you have more freedom with them than most of the industries we work in. A health or cosmetic business is restricted in what it may do with a testimonial. A locksmith isn't, so you can ask for reviews after a job, reply to them and use them. Most locksmiths we audit aren't asking at all, which is the cheapest thing on this page to fix.

How do you measure this?

By callouts and jobs booked. A locksmith is hired on a phone call, so we track calls back to the search that produced them in GA4, along with form enquiries and online bookings. That's the only way the map pack gets credit for work it actually did rather than losing it to whichever channel was touched last.

Do you work with locksmiths outside Sydney?

Yes, across Australia. The licensing regime is where it matters: the rules described on this page are the New South Wales position, read from the Security Industry Act 1997 and the police licensing pages. Other states run their own schemes and they are not the same, so we check which one binds you before we write anything that mentions your licence.

What does SEO for a locksmith cost in Australia?

Published Australian agency figures put trades and home services businesses in the range shown above, and most Australian small businesses sit inside the same band. What moves it for a locksmith is how many jobs need a page of their own, how large a service area you actually cover and how contested the map pack is in your city. The calculator on this page will give you an estimate.

Will AI search actually send me locksmith work?

It already sends questions. People ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode what a callout should cost, whether a car key can be cut without the original and who covers their area after hours. Those answers are assembled from sources the model can find and trust, so the work is to make your pages, schema and listings readable to them.
