What is SEO for a home improvement company?
SEO for a home improvement company is the work of being found by somebody who has decided something in their house needs doing and has not yet decided who is doing it. The difficulty starts with the name of the industry. Measured across Australia, 43,700 searches a month sit around this trade, and the largest single phrase in it, home improvement itself at 2,600 a month, is not a customer: Ahrefs files it under the parent topic home improvement cast, and it costs US$0.25 a click against US$1.80 for bathroom renovation. It is the 1991 American sitcom. Set that aside along with the loan applications and the idea browsing, and 28,400 searches a month are left. They split almost exactly in half: 14,400 for somebody who wants a person to turn up and do a job, and 14,000 for somebody who has named a renovation. Those are two different businesses, sold to two different people, and that is what the pages have to be built for.
- Usually moves first
- A complete Business Profile, because most of the small-job demand is settled in a map pack
- Compounds
- A page for each kind of job you actually want, in the words the buyer types
- Measured by
- Enquiries by job type, not rankings
Why home improvement businesses lose the jobs they want
A quarter of the searches in this industry belong to a television network, a bank or somebody who is only browsing, and the ones that are genuinely yours are two separate businesses sharing one page.

One page for odd jobs and for renovations
Somebody who wants a tap washer changed and somebody planning a $40,000 bathroom are not the same buyer and do not read the same page. In the demand below they are almost exactly the same size: 14,400 searches a month want a person for a job, 14,000 have named a renovation, which is 1.03 times. A single services page carrying both competes properly for neither, and it prices you wrong in the reader’s head before they call.
-
The industry’s own name is a television programme
Home improvement on its own is 2,600 searches a month, and it is the sitcom. Ahrefs clusters it under the parent topic home improvement cast, and it carries a cost per click of US$0.25 while bathroom renovation carries US$1.80 and bathroom renovation sydney carries US$5.00. A term worth a seventh of its neighbours on the same subject is not being bid on by anybody trying to win work. Ranking for it would feel like progress and would not produce a single enquiry.
-
Nobody answers the question everybody asks
The cost questions are 4,700 searches a month, and two rows are 2,900 of that, which is 61.7 per cent: bathroom renovation cost at 1,500 and kitchen renovation cost at 1,400. These are people who intend to hire somebody and want a number before they ring. Almost every renovation site refuses to publish anything at all, which sends the reader to a calculator, a forum or a competitor who will talk about it.
-
Nobody can tell which enquiry came from where
When an enquiry arrives by phone it gets logged as “Google” or as nothing at all. Without the job type recorded against the source, there's no way to know whether the bathroom page earned its keep or whether the map pack did, so the next page gets chosen on a hunch.

Forty-seven terms, 43,700 searches a month, and the shape of that table is the whole argument for the page. Start with what isn't yours: 10,600 searches a month, 24.3 per cent of everything here, belong to somebody else entirely. 4,100 of that is a television programme, including the phrase this industry is named after. 3,700 is a loan application, which a bank wins. 2,800 is somebody browsing pictures. What's left is 28,400 searches a month from people who intend to hire somebody, and it divides almost exactly in half: 14,400 want a person for a job against 14,000 who have named a renovation, which is 1.03 times. Those halves are two different businesses. And inside the first half, 9,800 of the 14,400, which is 68.1 per cent, names neither a job nor a city, so a Business Profile settles it before a word of your website is read. The one question the whole industry is asked and almost nobody answers is what it costs: 4,700 searches a month, and 2,900 of that, 61.7 per cent, is just two rows.
Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, Australia, monthly average, pulled 14 September 2026. Cost per click is reported by Ahrefs in US dollars.
What our home improvement SEO covers
Built around the split in the demand: the people who want a job done, and the people who have named a renovation.
-
Your Business Profile
Most of the small-job demand returns a map pack, so the profile settles it before anybody opens a website. Categories, service areas, the jobs you actually take, photographs of your own finished work, and the reviews that decide which three listings a caller sees.
-
A page for each job, not one page for all of them
Bathrooms, kitchens, extensions and small jobs are four different sales to four different people, and they're searched separately. A bathroom renovation page that talks about gutter cleaning tells a reader you aren't the business for a bathroom. One page per job you actually want is what competes.
-
A page for each city you work in, not each suburb
City terms carry real volume: 4,150 searches a month name a city alongside a handyman and 4,400 name one alongside a renovation. Suburb pages with the name swapped rank for nothing and read as spam. Service areas belong in the Business Profile; cities can earn a page of their own.
-
A straight answer on what it costs
The cost questions are 4,700 searches a month and most of your competitors won't touch them. A page that gives a real range and explains what moves it, the size of the room, the state of the plumbing, whether the walls move, wins the search and pre-qualifies the caller before they ring you.
-
Being quotable in AI answers
Plain answers to the questions buyers actually ask, structured so an answer engine can lift them: what a bathroom renovation costs, how long a kitchen takes, when an extension needs approval. Nobody can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not claim to.
-
Enquiries recorded by job type
Call tracking and form tracking that record which kind of job each enquiry was for, so you can see whether the bathroom page earned its keep or whether the map pack did, and choose the next page on evidence.

Advertising home improvement work in New South Wales
Residential building work is licensed in New South Wales, and the licence decides what you are allowed to advertise, not just what you are allowed to build. Every provision below was read first-hand from the Home Building Act 1989 (NSW) on 14 September 2026.
What the Act stops you doing
- Advertise that you will contract to do work your licence does not authorise. Section 4(1) says a person must not contract to do any residential building work or any specialist work except as or on behalf of the holder of a contractor licence authorising that work, with a maximum penalty of 1,000 penalty units for a corporation and 200 penalty units in any other case. At the $110 a unit fixed by section 17 of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999, that is $110,000 and $22,000.
- Suggest you hold a licence or a certificate you do not hold. Section 17 makes a misrepresentation about contractor licences or certificates an offence, and it carries the same maximum penalties.
- Assume a website is not covered. Section 18(3) applies that Part not only to representations made to identifiable people but also to those made by way of advertisement, where the people they reach may or may not be identifiable. A claim on a landing page is caught the same way a claim made on the phone is.
- Subcontract to whoever is cheapest. Section 4(2) says a licence holder who has contracted to do residential building work must not contract with another person to do that work unless that person also holds a contractor licence for work of that kind.
- Publish somebody else’s finished work as your own. Photographs of jobs you didn't do are a representation like any other, and in this industry they're the first thing a buyer looks at.
What it lets you say
- Name the work your licence actually authorises, in the words buyers search for. That list is what decides which pages should exist.
- Put your licence number where the law already expects it. Section 7(2)(b) requires the number of the contractor licence in the contract itself, so a buyer will see it before they sign, and there is nothing stopping you showing it earlier.
- Be straight about scale. Nothing stops you saying you take half-day jobs, or that you don't, and saying so filters the 14,400 searches a month that haven't named a job at all.
- Publish your own photographs, from jobs you actually did, and say where and when.
Two things this page deliberately does not give you a number for. Section 7(1A) requires a written contract once the price, or the reasonable market cost of labour and materials, exceeds “the prescribed amount”, and the Act leaves that amount to the regulations rather than fixing it, so a figure quoted from a blog can be out of date without the Act changing. Section 140(2)(c) likewise empowers regulations about advertisements and the display of signs for this work, so that duty sits in the Home Building Regulation. We check both against the current Regulation for your state before writing anything. This supports your own obligations as a licensee; it does not replace them, and it is not legal advice. Home Building Act 1989 (NSW)
How our home improvement SEO works
Four steps, in this order, because the map pack usually moves before anything else does.
-
Decide which jobs you want
We start with the work your licence authorises and the jobs you actually want more of, because a business chasing bathrooms and a business chasing odd jobs need different sites.
-
Fix the Business Profile
Categories, service areas, jobs, photographs and reviews, so the searches that are settled in the map pack start returning you.
-
Write the job and city pages
One page per job you want, one per city you work in, in the words the demand table says people actually type, including what it costs.
-
Measure by job type, not by ranking
Enquiries tagged by the job they came from, so the next page is chosen on evidence instead of a hunch.
How much home improvement SEO costs in Australia
Published Australian agency figures put SEO for trades and home services at $1,500 to $2,500+ a month, and most Australian small businesses pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month. No regulator sets SEO prices in Australia, so these are market figures, not a quote.
-
$1,500 to $2,500+
a month, what Australian agencies publish for trades and home services
Published Australian agency rate card, verified September 2026
-
$1,500 to $3,500
a month, where most Australian small businesses sit
Two Australian SEO cost guides agree, verified September 2026
-
US$500 to US$1,000
a month, the most common agency retainer worldwide
What moves the price
- How many kinds of job you want to compete for
- Whether you are chasing renovations, small jobs or both
- How many cities you work across, and how contested they are
- The state of your Business Profile and your review history
- The state of your site and your call tracking
Set the market figures against what a click costs to buy. “Bathroom renovation sydney” runs at US$5.00 a click and “home extension builders” at US$4.00, and that is for one click, not one job won. Organic visibility for the same searches is what you are paying to build.

Home Improvement SEO Questions
We do renovations and odd jobs. Do we really need two sets of pages?
Yes, and the demand is the reason rather than the theory. Searches from somebody who wants a person for a job are 14,400 a month and searches that name a renovation are 14,000, so the two halves are almost exactly the same size, and they're searched by different people asking different questions. Somebody after half a day of odd jobs and somebody planning a bathroom don't read the same page, and a page that tries to serve both quietly tells each of them you aren't the right business.
Can you get us ranking for home improvement?
We would rather not, and it is worth explaining why. Home improvement on its own is 2,600 searches a month in Australia and it is the 1991 American sitcom. Ahrefs files it under the parent topic home improvement cast, and it costs US$0.25 a click while bathroom renovation costs US$1.80 and bathroom renovation sydney costs US$5.00. Nobody trying to win renovation work is bidding on it, because the people searching it are looking for a cast list. Ranking there would look like progress on a report and produce nothing.
Should we publish our prices?
You should publish a range and explain what moves it, which isn't the same thing as publishing a price list. The cost questions are 4,700 searches a month and two of them, bathroom renovation cost at 1,500 and kitchen renovation cost at 1,400, are 61.7 per cent of that on their own. Those are people who intend to hire somebody. Most of your competitors refuse to say anything, so the reader ends up at a calculator or a forum. A page that gives a real range and the reasons behind it wins the search and screens out the callers who were never going to book.
Should we write a page for every suburb we work in?
No. A page per suburb with the name swapped ranks for nothing and reads as spam to a person. Cities are different: 4,150 searches a month name a city next to a handyman and 4,400 name one next to a renovation, so a genuine page about the work you do in Melbourne or Perth can earn its place. Suburbs belong in your Business Profile service areas, where they actually do something.
Why does so much of this depend on Google Business Profile?
Because most of the small-job demand names nothing at all. Of the 14,400 monthly searches from somebody wanting a person, 9,800, which is 68.1 per cent, name neither a job nor a city: handyman, handyman near me, handyman services and the like. Searches like that return a map pack, so the profile decides whether a caller sees you before your website gets a chance. The site then has to answer the question the map pack couldn't.
Do you need to see our licence before you start?
Yes, if you are doing residential building work. Section 4(1) of the Home Building Act 1989 makes it an offence to contract to do residential building work without a contractor licence authorising it, section 17 covers misrepresenting the licence you hold, and section 18(3) applies that Part to claims made in advertising as well as to claims made to a person. So the first thing we do is list what your licence actually authorises, and the pages describe that and nothing else.
What about all the renovation loan searches?
They aren't your customers, and it's worth knowing that before somebody sells you a content plan built on them. Home renovation loan, home improvement loans and the rest are 3,700 searches a month, and what ranks for them is banks and comparison sites. The person searching hasn't chosen a builder yet, they're working out whether they can afford one, and the page they need is a lender’s page. Writing finance content puts you in a fight with the banks for a reader who isn't ready to book anything.
Our work all comes from word of mouth. Is search worth it?
It's worth it for the jobs that don't come that way, and for what a referred customer finds when they check you. Somebody handed your name will still search it, and what they find is your Business Profile, your reviews and whichever page best explains the job they have in mind. Search also reaches the 28,400 people a month who intend to hire somebody and have nobody to ask.
Can you write the content, or do we have to?
We write it, and we send it to you before anything is published. You tell us what a job actually involves, what changes the price and what you won't take on, and we turn that into pages. You're the only one who can confirm what's accurate about your work, and in a licensed trade that review matters more than most.
How will we know it is working?
By enquiries recorded against the kind of job they came from, not by a ranking report. Calls and forms are tagged so you can see whether the bathroom page, the extensions page or the map pack produced each one. Rankings are a means to that, and on their own they tell you nothing about whether the phone rang.
