What is SEO for financial services?

SEO for financial services is the work of getting an advice practice found when people search for a financial adviser, retirement advice, SMSF help or estate planning on Google, Google Maps and AI assistants. It covers the Google Business Profile for each office, a strong page for each area of advice you want more of, reviews on Google, site speed, and tracking that ties each search back to a client engaged, all written within the rules your licence obliges you to advertise under.

Why advice firms lose qualified enquiries online

Most practices we speak to have the same four problems, and none of them shows up in a rankings report.

New clients by source, This quarter · All advisers (Example)
Source, as recorded at first appointmentNew clients
Referral from an existing client 11
Referral from an accountant or broker 7

“Found us online” 8
Not recorded 9

Example figures. The shape is the point: “found us online” and “not recorded” say nothing about which search, which advice page or which office produced the enquiry, so the practice can't tell which of its advice areas the internet is actually feeding.
  • The word your clients type is not the word the law uses

Australians search “financial advisor” about 13 times more often than “financial adviser”, and it is the Australian spelling the Corporations Act restricts. A site written only in the regulated spelling is invisible to most of the people looking for it.

  • Compliance review kills the content calendar

Every page has to clear a licensee review, so most practices publish once and then stop. The firms winning these searches have a page for each area of advice, and each one had to get through the same process.

  • Referrals you cannot turn up

Accountants, brokers and existing clients send your best work, and none of them grows when an adviser has capacity.

  • Enquiries that arrive without a source

Xplan, AdviserLogic and Midwinter record the client. None of them can tell you which search, which page or which office sent them.

How Australians search for financial advice

The searches Australians make every month, grouped by what the person needs, with the page or asset that wins each one.

How Australians search for financial advice
SearchSearches a month, AustraliaWhat wins it
Looking for an adviser
financial advisor 13,000 A homepage built around who you advise, in the spelling people type
financial planner 2,100 The same page, naming planning as one of your services
financial advisor near me 1,100 The Maps pack and a complete Business Profile for each office
financial adviser 1,000 The same pages, in the spelling the Corporations Act uses
Superannuation and SMSF
self managed super fund 7,100 A plain explainer on what running a fund involves
smsf 6,400 An SMSF advice page that says what you do and don't take on
superannuation advice 900 A super page written for the decision, not for other advisers
Life stage advice
retirement planning 2,400 A retirement page that says who the advice suits
estate planning 1,700 An estate page, and a clear line on what sits with a solicitor
The advice itself
financial planning 1,000 A page on what an engagement actually covers
financial advice 900 A page on how advice works, from first meeting to statement of advice
investment advice 500 An investment page that carries its risk information as prominently as its benefits

The two spellings tell the story. “financial advisor” is searched 13,000 times a month and “financial adviser” 1,000, and it is the second one, the Australian spelling, that section 923C of the Corporations Act restricts to people who meet the professional standards and are authorised to give personal advice to retail clients. The word your clients type is not the word the law governs. A practice entitled to the title can rank for both, and most of them only write one.

What our SEO for financial services includes

Six workstreams, run together, each one aimed at a client engaged rather than a ranking.

  • Google Business Profile and Maps

Each office set up properly: the right categories, the advice areas you actually take on, accurate hours, and real photos of the office and the team. Most “financial advisor near me” searches end on the profile, so it's where we start.

  • Pages for each area of advice

One strong page for each area you want more of: retirement, SMSF, superannuation, estate planning, insurance and investment. Each says who the advice suits, what an engagement covers and how you charge, written for the question the client is asking.

  • Office and location pages

Only for places where you have an office or genuinely see clients, and each written about that office. We don't build sets of near-identical suburb pages. Search engines treat those as doorway pages.

  • Reviews, handled carefully

We help you ask clients for a Google review and reply to each one without discussing their circumstances, their holdings or the advice they received. A reply is advertising, and it's public.

  • AI search visibility

People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode how to find an adviser. We structure your pages, schema and listings so those answers can find, trust and cite your practice.

    How AI search visibility works
  • Enquiry and client tracking

Calls, forms and online bookings, each tracked in GA4, so your practice manager can compare what search delivered against the clients your firm actually engages.

Marketing inside the financial services rules

ASIC’s Regulatory Guide 234 governs how financial products and services are advertised, and the Corporations Act restricts who may call themselves a financial adviser. The rules reach your website, your Business Profile, your ads and your social posts, and your licensee is responsible for what appears under its authorisation. This is where we draw the line.

What we won’t publish

  • “Financial adviser” or “financial planner” for anyone not authorised to use the title
  • Past performance shown without making plain that it doesn't indicate future performance
  • Performance figures more than three months out of date, or over a period chosen to flatter
  • A headline benefit so strong that the risk information underneath can't correct it
  • “Independent”, “impartial” or “unbiased” where section 923A does not allow them

What we do instead

  • Your AFS licence or authorised representative number stated, so a client can check you on ASIC Connect
  • Risk information given as much prominence as the returns and benefits beside it
  • Past performance, where it is used at all, shown over standard periods and dated
  • Qualifications and authorisations stated person by person, exactly as each person holds them
  • Reviews earned on Google, with replies that disclose nothing about a client’s circumstances

We write financial services copy to ASIC Regulatory Guide 234, the Corporations Act title restrictions and the Australian Consumer Law. It supports the obligations you and your licensee already carry; it does not replace them, and nothing goes live until your licensee has approved it. ASIC RG 234, Advertising financial products and services

How our SEO process for financial services works

Five steps, in order. The pace is set by your practice, your advice areas and your licensee’s review process, so the plan sets it rather than a template.

  1. Audit

Search Console, each office’s Business Profile, the Maps pack, your site and your enquiry tracking.

  2. Growth plan

What to fix and what to build, in order of the clients each is likely to bring.

  3. Build

Business Profiles, advice pages, technical fixes and tracking, with every page approved by your licensee before it goes live.

  4. Compound

Content, reviews and authority, built on what the data shows is working.

  5. Report

    Against clients engaged, not rankings.

How much SEO for financial services costs in Australia

Published Australian agency figures put SEO for legal and financial businesses at $2,500+ a month, and most Australian small businesses pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month. No regulator sets SEO prices in Australia, so these are market figures, not a quote.

  • $2,500+

a month, what Australian agencies publish for legal and financial businesses

Published Australian agency rate card, verified September 2026

  • $1,500 to $3,500

a month, where most Australian small businesses sit

Two Australian SEO cost guides agree, verified September 2026

  • US$500 to US$1,000

a month, the most common agency retainer worldwide

Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers, 2023

What moves the price

  • How many offices and advice areas you have
  • Whether you want retirement, SMSF, insurance or general advice clients
  • How contested your area is
  • The state of your site and your enquiry tracking
  • How long your licensee’s review process takes

Set the market figures next to what one ongoing advice client is worth to your practice over the years they stay, and against the US$2 to US$3.50 a click that advice searches cost to buy. The useful question is how many clients the work has to bring in to pay for itself.

SEO for Financial Services Questions

Do you lock advice firms into contracts?

No. We work without lock-in contracts. If the work isn't paying its way for your practice, you're free to stop.

What is local SEO for financial advisers?

Local SEO is the part of SEO for financial services that decides whether you appear in the Google Maps pack and in “financial advisor near me” results. It rests on a complete Google Business Profile for each office, consistent firm details across directories, reviews on Google, and pages that make clear where you are and which clients you take on.

How much does SEO for financial services cost in Australia?

Published Australian agency figures put SEO for legal and financial businesses at $2,500+ a month, and most small businesses pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month (both verified September 2026). What moves the price is how many offices and advice areas you have and how contested your market is. We scope each practice before quoting.

How long does SEO for financial services take?

It depends on how contested your area is, the condition of your site, how much authority it has already earned and how long your licensee takes to approve new pages. Business Profile and technical fixes tend to move first, while ranking for competitive advice searches in a capital city takes longer. Rather than quote an industry average, we set out what is realistic for your practice before you commit to anything.

Should our website say “financial advisor” or “financial adviser”?

Both, if you are entitled to the title. Section 923C of the Corporations Act restricts “financial adviser”, “financial planner” and similar terms to people who meet the professional standards and are authorised to give personal advice on relevant financial products to retail clients. The Australian spelling is the one the law governs, and it is also the one almost nobody types: “financial advisor” is searched about 13 times more often. Where the title is properly held, the page can carry both spellings honestly.

Do we have to show our AFS licence number on the website?

We think you should, and we should be clear about why. ASIC’s guidance requires a credit licensee to include its credit licence number in printed advertisements; there is no equivalent rule requiring an AFS licence number in advertising. So this is a recommendation rather than a legal requirement. Showing the licence or authorised representative number lets a prospective client look you up on ASIC Connect, which is real proof at the moment they are deciding.

Can we publish investment returns on our website?

Carefully, or not at all. ASIC’s RG 234 says past performance must be accompanied by a prominent statement that it is not indicative of future performance, drawn to the reader’s attention unambiguously and without reservation. It also says performance data is not up to date if more than three months have passed since the end date used, and that returns should be shown over standard periods rather than a window chosen to flatter. Most advice practices are better served by explaining their process than by publishing numbers they then have to keep current.

Can we call our advice “independent”?

Only where section 923A of the Corporations Act allows it. “Independent”, “impartial” and “unbiased” are restricted terms, and the conditions attached to them are narrow. Where they do not apply we describe what the practice actually does, which is usually more persuasive anyway.

How does licensee approval fit into the work?

It is part of the build, not an afterthought. We write to RG 234 and the title rules from the start, then send each page to your licensee for review before anything goes live. The practices that win these searches are the ones that got a page live for each advice area, so the process has to be planned for rather than worked around.

Can you track which searches turn into clients?

Mostly, yes. We track calls, forms and online bookings in GA4. Xplan, AdviserLogic and Midwinter don't receive search data, so we match what search delivered against the clients your practice actually engages.

Can you get our practice into ChatGPT and AI Mode answers?

Nobody can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and it is worth being wary of anyone who does. What we can do is strengthen the signals those answers draw on: clear advice pages, accurate business listings, reviews on Google, structured data, and mentions on sites AI tools already trust.

Does each area of financial advice need its own page?

Where the client need is different, a dedicated page is useful. Retirement planning, superannuation and insurance enquiries involve different questions, so each page should explain the service your practice offers, who it is intended for and what an engagement involves. We prioritise the advice areas you want to grow and include your licensee in the approval process before publication.
