What is SEO for a car dealership?
SEO for a car dealership is mostly the work of deciding what not to chase. Measured across Australia, 149,900 searches a month sit around this industry, and 70,400 of them, 47.0 per cent, are somebody browsing stock: cars for sale, used cars, used cars brisbane. You cannot win those and you would not profit from them if you did. They cost about US$0.10 a click, because the marketplaces that own them make money from listing fees rather than from selling a car, and Ahrefs files five of those phrases under the parent topic carsales. What a dealership can win is the other side of the forecourt: 15,200 searches a month from somebody who wants to sell a car, which is how you get stock, 27,400 arranging finance, and 16,300 who actually want a dealer. Those searches cost between US$1.00 and US$11.00 a click, which is what it looks like when a business rather than a marketplace is bidding.
- Usually moves first
- A complete Business Profile for each rooftop, because near-me searches are settled in a map pack
- Compounds
- Pages for trade-in, finance and each franchise you hold, not pages for stock
- Measured by
- Trade-in and finance enquiries and showroom visits, not rankings
Why dealerships lose to a marketplace
Nearly half the searches in this industry belong to businesses whose product is the listing, not the car, and most dealer marketing is aimed squarely at them.

Chasing stock searches you can't win
Cars for sale is 20,000 searches a month and used cars is 12,000, and what ranks is carsales, Gumtree and the other marketplaces. You can tell how little that traffic is worth by what advertisers will pay for it: about US$0.10 a click. Sell my car costs US$4.00 and business car finance costs US$11.00. Any month spent trying to outrank a marketplace on its own product is a month not spent on the searches that pay.
-
The trade-in page is an afterthought, and it's your stock pipeline
Somebody searching sell my car, or working out what their car is worth, is 24,800 searches a month, and for a dealer that is not a marketing problem, it is a buying opportunity. Sell my car alone is 9,100 a month at US$4.00 a click. Most dealer websites answer it with a form headed “trade in” and no valuation, no range and no explanation, which sends the person to RedBook or Gumtree instead. Those two brands take 4,200 valuation searches a month between them.
-
Nobody trusts a dealer, and nobody writes the page that fixes it
Two of the highest-volume questions in this industry are people trying not to be taken advantage of: what a dealer’s administration fees are, and what the red flags are at a used car yard. That's roughly 4,100 searches a month of hostile research. A dealership that answers both plainly, on its own site, with its own fees, is doing something almost nobody in the industry does, and it's the cheapest trust you'll ever buy.
-
Nobody can tell which enquiry came from where
Marketplace leads, walk-ins, finance enquiries and trade-in valuations all land in the same inbox, or on the same phone, and get logged the same way. Without the type recorded against the source there is no way to know whether your own website earned anything at all, which is exactly the argument a marketplace rep wants you unable to answer.
What Australia searches for
Every volume below is an Australian monthly average, pulled from Ahrefs on 14 September 2026. The grouping is the argument: read the totals and the cost per click, not the individual rows.

Fifty-four terms, 149,900 searches a month, and the cost per click column settles the strategy before the volume column gets a say. 70,400 searches a month, 47.0 per cent of everything here, is somebody browsing stock, and it costs about US$0.10 a click because the marketplaces that own it sell listings rather than cars. Ahrefs names them: five of those phrases carry the parent topic “carsales”. Set that aside and what is left divides into two things a dealership is uniquely placed to win. The first is the transactions: 15,200 a month want to sell you a car, 9,600 are working out what one is worth and 27,400 are arranging finance, which is 52,200 a month at between US$1.00 and US$11.00 a click. The second is the 16,300 a month who actually want a dealer, by franchise or by place, almost all of it settled in a map pack. That second group is a quarter the size of the browse demand and worth many times more, and one Perth dealer group has already made itself the answer for car yards near me, which is the proof that it can be done.
Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, Australia, monthly average, pulled 14 September 2026. Cost per click is reported by Ahrefs in US dollars.
What our car dealership SEO covers
Built around the searches a marketplace can't take from you.
-
A Business Profile per rooftop
Every near-me search in this industry is decided in a map pack before a website opens, and that is 16,300 searches a month. One complete, correct profile per site, with the franchises you hold, real photographs of the yard, opening hours that survive a public holiday, and the reviews that decide which three listings a buyer sees.
-
A trade-in page that actually values the car
Somebody selling a car is 24,800 searches a month and for you that's stock, bought without an auction fee. A page that gives a real range, explains what moves it and asks for the details that let you make an offer beats a form headed “trade in” that sends the reader to RedBook instead.
-
Finance content that answers the question
Finance is 27,400 searches a month and the bidding is fierce, up to US$11.00 a click, because the lenders know what it is worth. A calculator, honest repayment examples and a plain explanation of what the dealership can and cannot arrange puts you in a conversation that usually happens at a bank.
-
Pages for the places you are licensed to trade
Real catchment pages for the sites you actually operate, not a suburb list with the name swapped. In this industry that is not only an SEO judgement: advertising that you carry on business other than at your licensed place is caught by the Act itself.
-
Being quotable in AI answers
Plain answers to what buyers ask before they choose a yard: what your fees are, what your warranty covers, what happens to a trade-in, how a test drive works. Structured so an answer engine can lift them. Nobody can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not claim to.
-
Enquiries recorded by type and by source
Trade-in valuations, finance enquiries, test drive bookings and stock enquiries tracked separately, and separated from your marketplace leads, so you can finally answer the question of what your own website is worth.

Advertising a dealership in New South Wales
Motor dealing is licensed in New South Wales, and unusually the Act has something specific to say about your website rather than only about your yard. Every provision below was read first-hand from the Motor Dealers and Repairers Act 2013 (NSW) on 14 September 2026.
What the Act stops you doing
- Leave your licence number off your website, or bury it. Section 19A requires a motor dealer to display the licence number on the website, whether or not you sell online, and on all advertising material. Section 19A(2) says it must be in a reasonably prominent position, clearly legible, and identified as the licence number. Ten-point grey in a footer satisfies none of those three. The maximum penalty is 20 penalty units, which at the $110 a unit fixed by section 17 of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999 is $2,200.
- Advertise that you deal from somewhere you are not licensed for. Section 11(1) makes it an offence to carry on, or to advertise that you carry on or are willing to carry on, the business of a motor dealer unless you hold a licence, the business is carried on at a place the licence is granted for, and it is carried on in accordance with the licence. The maximum is 1,000 penalty units, which is $110,000, and for a second offence that or 12 months imprisonment, or both.
- Suggest you hold a licence you do not hold. Section 17(1) makes holding yourself out as the holder of a licence an offence when you are not, with a maximum of 50 penalty units, which is $5,500.
- Advertise repair work you are not certified for. Section 17(2) applies the same rule to holding yourself out as authorised to do a class of repair work without the tradesperson’s certificate for it, which matters if your service department markets separately.
- Assume your web pages are outside all of this. Sections 11, 12 and 13 each attach to advertising as well as to trading, and section 19A names the website in terms.
What it lets you say
- Show your licence number properly, and treat it as a trust signal rather than a compliance chore. It's the one credential every legitimate dealer has and most of them hide.
- Name the franchises you hold and the place you trade from, which is also where the winnable search demand is.
- Write a real page for each site you're licensed to operate, with its own stock, staff, hours and reviews.
- Publish your fees. Thousands of people a month are searching for what dealer administration fees are, and answering it plainly is allowed, useful and rare.
Section 5(1) defines a motor dealer as a person carrying on the business of dealing in motor vehicles as a retailer or on a wholesale basis, and the Act separately excludes financiers and motor vehicle brokers, so the answer differs depending on exactly what your business does. The Act applies in New South Wales and every other state licenses motor dealing under its own legislation, so a group trading across borders can hold several licences and needs the right number on the right pages. The Act also lets regulations prescribe the form and content of dealer advertisements, so some detail sits in the Regulation rather than here. We check which regime applies to you before writing anything. This supports your own obligations as a licensee; it does not replace them, and it is not legal advice. How our car dealership SEO works
Four steps, in this order, because the map pack usually moves before anything else does.
-
Decide what not to chase
We start by separating the searches a marketplace owns from the ones a dealer can win, so the budget goes where a result is possible.
-
Fix the profiles
One complete Business Profile per rooftop, with franchises, photographs, hours and reviews, so the near-me searches start returning you.
-
Build the transaction pages
Trade-in with a real valuation, finance with a real calculator, and the trust content that answers what buyers are actually asking about dealers.
-
Measure by enquiry type
Trade-ins, finance, test drives and stock enquiries tracked separately from marketplace leads, so you know what your own site is worth.

Car Dealership SEO Questions
Can you get us ranking for used cars in our city?
Almost certainly not, and we would rather say so before you pay us. Used cars is 12,000 searches a month and cars for sale is 20,000, and what ranks is carsales, Gumtree and the other marketplaces, whose entire business is that page. The clearest evidence is what advertisers will pay: those terms run at about US$0.10 a click, while sell my car runs at US$4.00 and business car finance at US$11.00. A term nobody will bid on is a term nobody is making money from. The winnable demand is the 52,200 searches a month around trade-in, valuation and finance, and the 16,300 that actually ask for a dealer.
Is SEO even worth it when we already pay a marketplace for leads?
They do different jobs, and the honest way to decide is to measure them separately, which most dealerships can't currently do. A marketplace sells you a buyer who is comparing you against every other yard on the same screen. Your own site is where somebody who wants to sell you a car, arrange finance or book a test drive goes, and those are the enquiries with the better margin because there's no lead fee and often no auction fee on the stock. The first thing we do is split the tracking so you can see what each one actually produces.
Why do you keep talking about trade-ins rather than sales?
Because it is the part of the demand a dealership is uniquely placed to win, and it is where the stock comes from. Sell my car is 9,100 searches a month at US$4.00 a click and the valuation terms add another 9,600. That is somebody actively trying to hand you a car. Most dealer websites meet them with a form headed trade in and no number on the page, so they go to RedBook or Gumtree instead, and those two take 4,200 valuation searches a month between them. A trade-in page that gives a real range is the highest-return page on most dealer sites.
Should we write a page for every suburb we draw buyers from?
No, and in this industry there is a second reason beyond the usual one. The usual reason is that a page per suburb with the name swapped ranks for nothing and reads as spam. The second is section 11(1) of the Motor Dealers and Repairers Act, which catches advertising that you carry on, or are willing to carry on, the business of a motor dealer other than at the place your licence is granted for. Real pages for the sites you actually operate, yes. A page claiming you sell cars in thirty suburbs you have no licensed premises in, no.
Where does our licence number have to appear?
On your website and on all your advertising material, and section 19A is specific about how: in a reasonably prominent position, clearly legible, and identified as the licence number. Most dealer sites fail at least one of those, usually all three, by setting it in small grey type in a footer. It is worth fixing beyond the compliance point, because it is the one credential every legitimate dealer holds and buyers in this industry are unusually suspicious.
People search things like red flags at a used car dealership. Should we go anywhere near that?
Yes, and it's one of the best opportunities on this list. Roughly 4,100 searches a month are people researching dealer administration fees and what to watch out for at a used car yard. That's hostile research by somebody who is definitely buying a car from somebody. A dealership that answers both honestly, publishes its own fees and explains what its warranty covers is doing what almost nobody in the industry does, and it converts the most sceptical buyer there is.
We hold three franchises. Do they need separate pages?
Yes, because they're searched separately and often by different people. Ford dealer near me is 2,000 searches a month, toyota dealer near me 1,900, honda dealer near me 1,300, mg dealer near me 1,200 and subaru dealer near me 900. Each of those is somebody who has already chosen a make and now wants the nearest franchise holder. A single page listing all your brands competes properly for none of them, and it also competes with the manufacturer’s own dealer locator, which you won't outrank without a page of your own.
Can a dealership really beat a marketplace on a near-me search?
On near-me searches, yes, and there's direct evidence in the data. Car yards near me is 1,900 searches a month and Ahrefs files it under the parent topic of a Perth dealer group, meaning one dealer has become the answer for that phrase. Near-me searches are decided in a map pack, and a map pack rewards a complete profile, real photographs, correct hours and recent reviews, none of which a national marketplace can supply for your yard. That's the one part of this market where being local is the advantage rather than the handicap.
Our finance is handled by the manufacturer. Is there still anything to write?
Quite a lot, because the search demand is for understanding rather than for a lender. Car finance calculator is 9,600 searches a month and car finance is 8,800, and what people want first is an idea of repayments and what they can qualify for. A calculator and a plain explanation of what your dealership can and can't arrange catches that person while they are still deciding, which is well before they would otherwise speak to anyone. You aren't competing with the bank, you are getting to the conversation earlier.
How will we know it is working?
By enquiries recorded against the type they came from, and kept separate from your marketplace leads. Trade-in valuations, finance enquiries, test drive bookings and stock enquiries each tied back to the page that produced them. That also gives you the number most dealer principals can't currently produce, which is what your own website is worth next to what you pay a marketplace for the same month.
