A registered profession we have worked with
What is SEO for an architect?
SEO for an architect is unusual, because the most important keyword decision on the account is a legal one before it is a marketing one. Measured across Australia, 69,250 searches a month sit around this profession, and only 12,650 of them, about one visitor in five, is somebody looking to hire anyone at all. 37,450 a month are studying architecture, reading about it or looking at it: brutalist, gothic, art deco, a magazine, a degree, a salary and a LEGO set. Another 7,200 mean computer architecture, which the Architects Act itself has to exclude by name. 8,600 want a plan rather than a person. And of the 12,650 who are genuinely hiring, 3,650 use words that carefully avoid the word architect, because the person they are hiring is not allowed to use it. Those are the searches that cost the most to advertise against, which tells you what they are worth.

Why good practices stay invisible
Most architectural websites are written in the language of the profession, which is the language of the people studying it rather than the people buying it.
What people asked for, last month
| What the visitor wanted, as entered when the contact came in | Contacts |
|---|---|
| Student asking about work experience or a portfolio | 19 |
| Wants drawings for a council DA, no architect needed | 14 |
| Knock-down rebuild or extension, has a budget | 9 |
| Asked what an architect costs, didn't reply again | 7 |
| New residential build, land already bought | 4 |
| Commercial project | 2 |
| Total new patients | 55 |
-
The site is written in the word nobody buys with
Architecture is 11,000 searches a month, the biggest term in the sector, and it costs US$0.25 a click. Architect near me is 600 searches a month and costs US$2.00. That is eight times as much for a term with one eighteenth of the volume, and the gap is the whole argument: advertisers pay for buyers, and almost nobody is buying under the word architecture. Writing the site around it brings students, not projects.
-
More than half of the demand is people who will never hire you
37,450 searches a month, 54.1 per cent of everything measured here, is somebody studying, browsing or admiring. Brutalist architecture is 3,600 a month. LEGO architecture is 3,200 with a keyword difficulty of zero, because it's a toy. Architectural Digest is 1,700, architect salary 1,500 and prison architect 500, which is a video game. A practice that ranks brilliantly for the sector's own vocabulary can still have an empty enquiry inbox.
-
You're sharing the word with an entire other industry
7,200 searches a month mean computer architecture: cloud architecture 2,000, microservices 1,800, enterprise and software 600 each, ARM 500. This is not our observation, it is the statute's. Section 4 of the Architects Act 2003 defines architecture as not including naval architecture, computer architecture or any other architecture not concerned with buildings, because Parliament had to disambiguate the same word. The search data and the legislation are describing the same problem.
-
The words that convert are the ones you may not be allowed to use
Of the 12,650 searches a month from somebody actually hiring, 3,650 are for a draftsman, a building designer or drafting services, and they carry a weighted cost per click of US$1.66 against US$1.02 for the architect terms. Draftsman melbourne is US$2.50 and building designer sydney US$2.00. They are 2.47 times smaller in volume and worth considerably more per visit. Which of those words your site may use is decided by your registration, not by your marketing.
-
Nobody can tell which page brought the project
Architectural enquiries are few, large and slow, so a practice that measures traffic or rankings learns almost nothing. Six enquiries in a month is a good month, and without recording which page produced which one, the next decision gets made on instinct about a pipeline worth far more per item than most businesses ever see.
What Australia searches for
Every volume below is an Australian monthly average, pulled from Ahrefs on 15 September 2026. The grouping is the argument: read the totals, not the individual rows.

Sixty-two terms, 69,250 searches a month, and only 12,650 of them, 18.3 per cent, is somebody looking to hire anybody. That is the worst ratio of any profession we have measured. 37,450 a month, 54.1 per cent, is somebody studying, browsing or admiring: a LEGO set at 3,200 with a keyword difficulty of zero, a magazine at 1,700, a salary at 1,500 and a video game at 500. Another 7,200, 10.4 per cent, means computer architecture, and that is not our reading of it but the statute's, because section 4 of the Architects Act 2003 has to exclude computer architecture from the definition by name. 8,600 more want a plan rather than a person. The part that should change what a practice does is inside the 12,650 who are hiring: 3,650 of them, 28.9 per cent, search for a draftsman, a building designer or drafting services, and those terms carry a weighted cost per click of US$1.66 against US$1.02 for the architect terms. The most valuable words in this profession are the ones used by the people who are not allowed to use its title, and whether your site may use them is a question about your registration.
Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, Australia, monthly average, pulled 15 September 2026. Cost per click is reported by Ahrefs in US dollars. Named practices were excluded from the table and are listed in this file's header.
What our architect SEO covers
Built around the one visitor in five who is actually planning a project.
-
Your registration read first, and the site written to it
Whether the site may say architect, architectural practice or architectural design is settled by your registration and the Architects Act, not by what ranks. We establish it before anything is written, because sections 9 and 10 put the exposure on whoever publishes the claim, and that includes us.
-
A page per project type, in the client's words
A knock-down rebuild, a heritage alteration, a dual occupancy, a commercial fitout and a new residential build are five different clients with five different budgets and five different questions. One portfolio page carrying all of them answers none of them, and it's the single most common structure we see on an architectural site.
-
The catchment, and a listing that wins architect near me
Architect near me is 600 searches a month at US$2.00 a click with a keyword difficulty of zero, which makes it the most winnable buyer term in the profession. It is settled in a map pack. A correct Business Profile with real project photography usually moves before anything on the website does.
-
The questions that decide whether you get the call
What an architect costs, what the stages are, when council gets involved and what happens if the quote comes back over budget. These get asked before an enquiry and answered almost nowhere, which is why so many first contacts arrive already half-lost. Writing them plainly is trust content, not an FAQ afterthought.
-
Being quotable in AI answers
Someone asking an assistant whether they need an architect or a building designer for their project is asking it to make a recommendation, and that is a question this profession is unusually well placed to answer properly. Plain answers structured so an answer engine can lift them. Nobody can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and we do not claim to.
-
Enquiries recorded by project type and value
Six enquiries in a month can be an excellent month in this profession, so traffic and rankings tell you almost nothing. Enquiries recorded against project type, and against the page that produced them, is the only reporting that makes the next decision an evidence-based one.

What you may call yourself in New South Wales
Architect is a protected title. Every provision below was read first-hand from the Architects Act 2003 (NSW) on 15 September 2026, and the penalty unit value from section 17 of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999 (NSW), which fixes it at $110.
What the Act stops you doing
- Call yourself an architect unless you are registered. Section 9(1) says an individual must not represent himself or herself to be an architect, and must not allow himself or herself to be represented as one, unless he or she is an architect, which section 4 defines as a person registered under the Act. The maximum penalty is 100 penalty units, which at $110 a unit is $11,000.
- Let the practice be described as an architect without a nominated architect. Section 10(1) says a corporation or firm must not represent itself to be an architect, or allow itself to be represented as one, unless it has at least one nominated architect responsible for the provision of its architectural services. Maximum 200 penalty units, which is $22,000.
- Assume a title tag is not a representation. Section 13(1)(b) says a representation using another title, name or description that indicates, or is capable of being understood to indicate, or is calculated to lead a person to infer, that the person is an architect, constitutes representing them to be one. Capable of being understood to indicate is a very low bar, and section 15 adds that represent includes claim and hold out.
- Offer a service using an architect and then not use one. Section 12(1) makes it an offence for a person other than an architect to provide an architectural service they offered or represented would be provided using an architect, if it is not provided by or under the supervision of an architect. Maximum 100 penalty units for an individual or 200 for a corporation.
- Assume the word architectural is a safe substitute. Section 14(e) permits it only as indicating that the person carries on the business of supplying goods in connection with architecture. There is no general exception in section 14 for an unregistered person offering architectural services under that name.
What it lets you say
- Say plainly that you are registered, and name the board you are registered with. It is allowed, it is useful, and almost nobody puts it where a client will read it.
- Describe a qualification you actually hold. Section 14(d) permits a person who holds an architectural qualification to describe himself or herself as holding it.
- Use landscape architect, naval architect or computer systems architect if that is what you are. Section 14(b) permits all three by name.
- Use architectural assistant, architectural technician or architectural drafter if you are an employee of an architect. Section 14(a) permits those three titles.
- Write a page for each project type and each catchment you genuinely take work in, in the words clients actually use.
This Act applies only in New South Wales, and every other state and territory registers architects under its own legislation, so a practice working across borders can be answering to more than one board. ⚠️ This is also why we ask what your registration covers before we write anything rather than after: sections 9(2) and 10(2) make it an offence for a person to represent an individual, or a corporation or firm, to be an architect if that person knows or ought reasonably to know that the representation would be untrue or unlawful, with a maximum of 200 penalty units in the case of a corporation. That provision reaches the agency writing the page, not only the practice. If you are not registered and want to know what you may call yourself, the NSW Architects Registration Board is the right place to ask. This supports your own obligations; it does not replace them, and it is not legal advice. Architects Act 2003 (NSW)
How our architect SEO works
Four steps, in this order, because what the site is allowed to say has to be settled before anything is written.
-
Read your registration first
We establish what you are registered as, in which states, and whether the practice has a nominated architect. That decides which of the words in the demand table your site may use at all.
-
Fix the catchment
A correct Business Profile with real project photography, so architect near me and the suburb searches around it start returning you. This is usually the fastest thing to move.
-
Write a page per project type
Knock-down rebuilds, alterations, heritage work, dual occupancies, commercial projects. Each written for that client, with the cost and process questions answered plainly rather than avoided.
-
Measure enquiries, not traffic
Project enquiries recorded against type and against the page that produced them, because in a profession with this few and this large a set of enquiries, traffic is a misleading number.

Architect SEO Questions
Can we put “architect” in our page titles?
If you are registered, yes, and you should. If you are not, that is a legal question rather than a marketing one. Section 13(1)(b) of the Architects Act 2003 says a title, name or description that is capable of being understood to indicate that a person is an architect counts as representing them to be one, and a title tag is a title. Section 9 carries a maximum of 100 penalty units, which at the $110 fixed by section 17 of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999 is $11,000, and section 10 carries 200 penalty units for a corporation. We ask what your registration covers before we write a single title, because sections 9(2) and 10(2) put the same exposure on us for publishing it.
We are building designers, not architects. Is there any point doing this?
There is more point, not less. Of the 12,650 searches a month from somebody actually hiring in this sector, 3,650 are for a draftsman, a building designer or drafting services, and they carry a weighted cost per click of US$1.66 against US$1.02 for the architect terms. Draftsman melbourne is US$2.50 a click and building designer sydney US$2.00, against US$0.50 for architect. Advertisers pay the most for the terms that convert, and in this profession those are the ones that avoid the protected title. The demand is smaller and worth more.
Should we be targeting “architecture”?
Almost certainly not. Architecture is 11,000 searches a month, the biggest term in the sector, and it costs US$0.25 a click because there is very little to sell to the people typing it. Its neighbours are brutalist architecture at 3,600, LEGO architecture at 3,200 with a keyword difficulty of zero because it is a toy, Architectural Digest at 1,700 and prison architect at 500, which is a video game. 37,450 searches a month in this sector, more than half of everything measured, are somebody studying or admiring buildings. You can rank beautifully for all of it and never take an enquiry.
Why does the Act mention computer architecture?
Because the word is genuinely ambiguous, and the legislation had to say so. Section 4 of the Architects Act 2003 defines architecture as not including naval architecture, computer architecture or any other architecture not concerned with buildings. The search data agrees: cloud architecture is 2,000 searches a month in Australia, microservices architecture 1,800, and enterprise, software and ARM architecture another 1,700 between them. That is 7,200 a month, 10.4 per cent of the sector's apparent demand, belonging to an entirely different industry. It is a useful thing to know before anybody reports on a ranking for architecture.
Can we rank for “architects sydney”?
It is harder than the volume makes it look, and it is worth knowing why before you fund the attempt. Ahrefs parents architects sydney to sam crawford architects, architects melbourne to rob mills architect and architects brisbane to shaun lockyer, which means those results resolve to specific well-known practices rather than to a category. A practice without that profile is competing with named reputations. Architect near me, at 600 searches a month, US$2.00 a click and a keyword difficulty of zero, is the term we would fund first, and it is won in a map pack rather than on the website.
People ask us what an architect costs and then disappear. Can SEO fix that?
Partly, and it's usually the highest-value writing on the site. The question gets asked constantly and answered almost nowhere, so the person asking it either guesses or asks somebody else. A page that explains how architectural fees are actually structured, what the stages are and what changes the number does two things: it ranks for a question with clear commercial intent, and the enquiries that arrive afterwards have already understood the answer. It also tends to reduce the enquiries you didn't want.
Do you need to see our registration before you start?
Yes, and it is a legal matter rather than a formality. Sections 9(2) and 10(2) of the Architects Act 2003 make it an offence for a person to represent an individual, or a corporation or firm, to be an architect where that person knows or ought reasonably to know the representation is untrue or unlawful, with a maximum of 200 penalty units in the case of a corporation. We are a corporation, and we would be the ones publishing it. So the first thing we establish is what you are registered as and in which states, and the pages are written to that.
Should we write a page for every suburb we work in?
No. A page per suburb with the name swapped ranks for nothing and reads as filler to a person, which matters more in a profession where the website is largely a credibility document. Catchments where you genuinely take projects, with the work you have actually done there, can earn a page. Everything else belongs in your Business Profile service areas.
How should we handle photography of projects?
As the most important content on the site, and as the thing most likely to be technically broken. Architectural photography is large, and an unoptimised gallery is the most common reason these sites are slow. It also needs to be labelled properly: the project type, the suburb and what the constraint was are what a client searches for and what an answer engine can read, and none of that survives a filename like DSC_4471. Real project photography on the Business Profile is also part of what wins architect near me.
How will we know it is working?
By project enquiries recorded against type and against the page that produced them, not by traffic. This profession has very few enquiries and very large ones, so traffic and rankings are close to meaningless as a measure here: a month with six enquiries can be a good month. Recording which page produced which enquiry is what lets the next decision be made on evidence, and it's the only report worth putting in front of a practice that's choosing between this and hiring.
