What is SEO for accountants?
SEO for accountants is the work of getting an accounting or tax practice found when people search for an accountant, a tax agent or a business adviser on Google, Google Maps and AI assistants. It covers the Google Business Profile for each office, a strong page for each service you want more of, reviews on Google, site speed, and tracking that ties each search back to a new client engaged, all written within the rules tax practitioners advertise under.
- Usually moves first
- Maps visibility for each office
- Compounds
- Service pages for the clients you want
- Measured by
- New clients engaged, not rankings
Why accounting firms lose new clients online
Most firms we speak to have the same four problems, and none of them shows up in a rankings report.
New clients by source
| Source, as recorded at onboarding | New clients |
|---|---|
| Referral from an existing client | 14 |
| Referral from a bank, broker or lawyer | 6 |
| Walked past the office | 2 |
| “Google” | 9 |
| Not recorded | 12 |
| Total new patients | 43 |
-
Tax time decides the year
Searches for “tax return” went from 12,100 in April to 246,000 in July 2026, and “tax agent near me” rose more than sixfold. A firm that starts building visibility in June is competing for the pages it needed to own months earlier.
-
Business clients search all year
Searches for “business accountant” held at 880 through July while tax return searches rose twentyfold. The clients who stay search quietly all year, and a site built only for tax time misses them.
-
Referrals you cannot grow
Existing clients, banks and brokers send your best work, but you control none of them, and none of them grows when a partner has capacity.
-
Onboarding that loses the source
Xero Practice Manager, FYI and Karbon record the client. None of them can tell you which search, which page or which office sent them.
How people search for an accountant in Australia
The searches Australians make every month, grouped by what the client needs, with the page or asset that wins each one.
| Search | Searches a month, Australia | What wins it |
|---|---|---|
| Nearby | ||
| accountant near me | 12,100 | The Maps pack and a complete Business Profile for each office |
| tax agent near me | 6,600 | The same profile, with tax returns listed as a service |
| tax accountant near me | 4,400 | A profile that says which returns you prepare and for whom |
| General | ||
| accountant | 18,100 | The Maps pack, then a homepage built around who you work for |
| tax agent | 6,600 | A page that states your TPB registration and what it covers |
| tax accountant | 4,400 | A tax page that says who you prepare returns for |
| Business clients | ||
| bookkeeper | 6,600 | A bookkeeping page, if you offer it, naming the software you work in |
| small business accountant | 1,000 | A small business page written for owners, not other accountants |
| business accountant | 1,000 | A business services page that says what an engagement includes |
| bas agent | 1,000 | A BAS page that explains what you lodge and for whom |
| company tax return | 1,000 | A company tax page |
| business advisory | 880 | An advisory page that says what the advice actually covers |
| Specialist work | ||
| smsf accountant | 2,900 | An SMSF page naming the fund work you do |
| chartered accountant | 2,900 | Team profiles that state each person’s memberships |
| cpa accountant | 480 | The same profiles, with CPA shown only where it is held |
| xero accountant | 170 | A page naming the software you work in and any partner status you hold |
| Individuals | ||
| tax return | 60,500 | A huge, mixed search. Worth one clear page on who a return suits and what it costs |
| tax return near me | 2,400 | The Maps pack in July, with hours that match tax time |
| City | ||
| accountants sydney | 1,600 | An office page for each city you practise in |
| accountants melbourne | 1,600 | The same, for each office |
| accountants brisbane | 1,600 | The same, for each office |
| Cost research | ||
| how much does an accountant cost | 320 | A fee page that explains what changes the price |
| accountant fees | 170 | The same fee page |
| how much does a tax return cost | 140 | A plain price for an individual return, if you publish one |
“tax return” is searched 60,500 times a month on average at US$3.04 a click, while “business accountant” is searched 1,000 times at US$32.41, more than ten times the price. Advertisers pay for business clients because they bring fees year after year, so that is where most of your pages should point.
Average monthly Google searches and cost per click in Australia, from Google Ads keyword data, pulled 12 September 2026. Searches with no reported volume are left out rather than estimated, and where Google groups close variants at an identical volume only one is listed.
What our SEO for accountants includes
Six workstreams, run together, each one aimed at a new client rather than a ranking.
-
Google Business Profile and Maps
Each office set up properly: the right categories, every service you offer, hours that stretch for tax time if yours do, and real photos of the office and the team. Most “accountant near me” searches end on the profile, so it's where we start.
-
Pages for business and tax clients
One strong page for each service you want more of: business tax, bookkeeping and BAS, SMSF, advisory and individual returns. Each says who it suits and how you charge, written for the question the client is asking.
-
Office and location pages
Only for places where you have an office or genuinely see clients, and each written about that office. We don't build sets of near-identical suburb pages. Search engines treat those as doorway pages.
-
Reviews, handled carefully
We help you ask clients for a Google review and reply to each one without disclosing anything about their affairs. Client confidentiality applies to a reply as much as to a file.
-
AI search visibility
People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode which accountant to use. We structure your pages, schema and listings so those answers can find, trust and cite your firm.
How AI search visibility works -
Enquiry and client tracking
Calls, forms and online bookings, each tracked in GA4, so your practice manager can compare what search delivered against new clients set up in Xero Practice Manager, FYI or Karbon.

Marketing inside the tax practitioner rules
Only a practitioner registered with the Tax Practitioners Board may advertise tax or BAS agent services, and an unregistered person who does faces a civil penalty. The Australian Consumer Law covers the rest. The rules reach your website, your Business Profile and your ads. This is where we draw the line.
What we won’t publish
- Tax or BAS agent services advertised for anyone not registered with the TPB
- The TPB’s Registered tax practitioner symbol without your registration number
- “CPA” for anyone who doesn't hold CPA Australia membership
- Promises about the size of a refund, or that a deduction will be allowed
- Claims to be the best or the cheapest that nobody can check
What we do instead
- Your TPB registration number stated, so clients can check you on the TPB Register
- The Registered tax practitioner symbol, with your number, if you choose to use it
- Qualifications stated person by person, exactly as each person holds them
- Fees explained plainly, including what a fixed fee covers
- Reviews earned on Google, with replies that disclose nothing about a client’s affairs
We write accounting copy to the Tax Agent Services Act, the TPB’s rules for its symbol and the Australian Consumer Law. It supports your own obligations as a registered tax practitioner; it does not replace them. Tax Practitioners Board, civil penalty provisions
How our SEO process for accountants works
Five steps, in order. The pace is set by your firm, your services and your market, so the plan sets it rather than a template.
-
Audit
Search Console, each office’s Business Profile, the Maps pack, your site and your enquiry tracking.
-
Growth plan
What to fix and what to build, in order of the clients each is likely to bring, planned around tax time.
-
Build
Business Profiles, service pages, technical fixes and tracking, with every page approved by your firm before it goes live.
-
Compound
Content, reviews and authority, built on what the data shows is working.
-
Report
Against new clients engaged, not rankings.
How much SEO for accountants costs in Australia
Published Australian agency figures put SEO for legal and financial businesses at $2,500+ a month, and most Australian small businesses pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month. No regulator sets SEO prices in Australia, so these are market figures, not a quote.
-
$2,500+
a month, what Australian agencies publish for legal and financial businesses
Published Australian agency rate card, verified September 2026
-
$1,500 to $3,500
a month, where most Australian small businesses sit
Two Australian SEO cost guides agree, verified September 2026
-
US$500 to US$1,000
a month, the most common agency retainer worldwide
What moves the price
- How many offices and services you have
- Whether you want business clients, individual returns or both
- How contested your area is
- The state of your site and your enquiry tracking
- Whether Google Ads runs alongside at tax time
Set the market figures next to what one business client is worth to your firm over the years they stay, and against the US$23 to US$32 a click that the business searches cost to buy. The useful question is how many clients a month the work has to bring in to pay for itself.

SEO for Accountants Questions
Do you lock accounting firms into contracts?
No. We work without lock-in contracts. If the work isn't paying its way for your firm, you're free to stop.
What is local SEO for accountants?
Local SEO is the part of SEO for accountants that decides whether you appear in the Google Maps pack and in “accountant near me” results. It rests on a complete Google Business Profile for each office, consistent firm details across directories, reviews on Google, and pages that make clear where you are and which clients you take on.
How much does SEO for accountants cost in Australia?
Published Australian agency figures put SEO for legal and financial businesses at $2,500+ a month, and most small businesses pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month (both verified September 2026). What moves the price is how many offices and services you have, and whether you want business clients, individual returns or both. We scope each firm before quoting.
How long does SEO for accountants take?
It depends on how contested your area is, the condition of your site and how much authority it has already earned. Business Profile and technical fixes tend to move first, while ranking for competitive business searches in a capital city takes longer. Rather than quote an industry average, we set out what's realistic for your firm before you commit to anything.
Should we chase tax return searches or business clients?
Usually business clients. “tax return” draws 60,500 searches a month on average, but advertisers pay around US$3 a click for it and over US$23 for “small business accountant”, because a business client brings fees year after year. We still build a clear page for individual returns if you want them, but most of the work points at the clients who stay.
Do we need to show our TPB registration number?
We think you should, whether or not you use the symbol. Only a practitioner registered with the Tax Practitioners Board may advertise tax or BAS agent services, and if you use the TPB’s Registered tax practitioner symbol it must carry your registration number. Showing the number lets a prospective client check you on the TPB Register, which is real proof at the moment they are deciding.
Can our website say we are CPAs?
Only for the people who hold the membership. CPA Australia says referring to yourself as a CPA depends on maintaining your membership, and a CPA offering public accounting services also needs a public practice certificate. We state qualifications person by person, exactly as each person holds them.
Do you work with bookkeepers and BAS agents?
Yes. BAS agents are registered with the Tax Practitioners Board too, so the same advertising rules apply, and the same approach works: a strong Business Profile, a page for each service, and tracking to new clients.
Can you track which searches turn into new clients?
Mostly, yes. We track calls, forms and online bookings in GA4. Xero Practice Manager, FYI and Karbon don't receive search data, so we match what search delivered against the new clients your firm sets up.
Do we need Google Ads as well?
Not always. SEO builds visibility you keep, while Google Ads buys it straight away, which can suit tax time. Business client clicks are expensive, so many firms use SEO to depend less on ads rather than to replace them. The same rules apply to ads, so we write both to the same standard.
Can you get our firm into ChatGPT and AI Mode answers?
Nobody can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, and it is worth being wary of anyone who does. What we can do is strengthen the signals those answers draw on: clear service pages, accurate business listings, reviews on Google, structured data, and mentions on sites AI tools already trust.
Should each accounting service have its own page?
Yes, when the services answer different client needs. Business tax, bookkeeping, BAS and advisory work should each explain who the service is for, what an engagement includes and how to enquire. We prioritise the services your firm wants to grow, then connect those pages to the relevant office and team information. Your firm approves the copy before publication.
